Fido kicks off LTE network across Canada

Android Central

Fido announced today the availability of LTE coverage in Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, and St. John's. Expansions later this year are planned for Kitchener-Waterloo, Guelph, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Kingston, Quebec City, and lots of other areas. They don't have any LTE phones just yet, but they do have a a mobile hotspot available to kick things off. Speeds average between 12 Mbps and 25 Mbps, and sometimes hitting 40 Mbps. Of course, Fido is really just tapping into the LTE network built by their parent company, Rogers, but at least means a few more high-speed options for those that prefer to go prepaid. Fido's top data add-on is $25 for 2 GB, or you can opt for 500 MB as part of their top-tier $50 plan.

More LTE is great and all, but I'd really like to see the little guys like WIND and Mobilicity get on the bandwagon. LTE is a big selling point for going with Rogers, Bell, or TELUS, even if the smaller carriers can beat them on plan prices. Fido would need some pretty compelling plans in order to pull away customers from Bell, TELUS, or even its big brother Rogers, but even though they've doubled up the data allocations on the two lower tiers, I'm still not entirely sold.

In any case,  more info on Fido's LTE roll-out is available here. Anyone on Fido hankering for LTE and not willing to go to the Big Three to get it?

Drug Abuse And Psychosis In Young People

During the teenage years, young individuals experience a turbulent change in their personal lives. They may experience a lot of emotional, physical, social and psychological transformations. Teenagers tend to struggle with establishing their identities that signify their independence from their parents. In many cases, they perform this in rebellious ways, may end up with abusing drugs and be associated with people who abuse substances. This habit may give them serious problems like social isolation, bad grades and mental problems like psychosis.

People who suffer from mental disorders like schizoaffective disorder and schizophrenia often experience psychosis. This disorder is characterized by losing touch with the reality and hearing or seeing things that are not seen by other people. This episode is called hallucination. Psychosis also includes having false beliefs or delusions. With this, the person may be saying that someone is trying to harm or kill him or emphasizing that he is a famous personality.

Psychosis and Drug Abuse in Teens

When drugs like cocaine and methamphetamine are abused, they may cause psychosis in young individuals. According to treatment centers professionals who conducted research about the association between psychosis and teen drug abuse say that young people who use cannabis will have an increasing risk of schizophrenia and other psychotic diseases.

Psychosis and Mental Problems

The issue on drug abuse and psychosis in teenagers can be complicated by the fact that psychosis can be experienced even if a teenager hasn't used any drug. Some research claimed that this disorder can be experienced by this population in their late teens or early twenties for males and mid twenties or early thirties for females. A lot of treatment centers professionals say that psychosis in young people may not be always caused by schizophrenia or drugs.

The need to Seek Help

No matter what causes psychosis, when a teen experiences the symptoms, he should be tested by a mental expert. This disorder is a very distressing mental condition as the sufferer may hear mean voices which usually urge him to harm or kill himself. The voices may tell the sufferer that nobody cares for him and everyone is against him lowering down the his self-esteem.

Treatment Options

For those who suffer from psychosis, there are available treatments for them. Psychosis that is caused by drug use can be dealt with by drug abuse treatments that include individual therapy, drug education, family therapy, group therapy and support group meetings. People who are diagnosed with schizophrenia may be given antipsychotic medicines that provide symptoms relief. They can also seek help to obtain their social, daily living, work and school skills back.

People who have psychosis should be treated immediately because this disorder can lead them to hurt themselves as they may feel very low about their own life.

Turkey appeals to UN council for Syria safe zone

UNITED NATIONS (AP) ? Turkey appealed to a reluctant UN Security Council Thursday for a safe haven for thousands of Syrians facing a "humanitarian disaster" as Britain and France said they would rule out no options ? including a no-fly zone ? to aid residents fleeing an escalating civil war.

But Turkish leaders held out little hope for the endorsement of a deeply divided council that has been paralyzed on taking action to stop the 18-month uprising that has killed more than 20,000 people.

"How long are we going to sit and watch while an entire generation is being wiped out by random bombardment and deliberate mass targeting?" asked Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu. "Let's not forget that if we do not act against such a crime against humanity happening in front of our eyes, we become accomplices to the crime."

Davutoglu proposed that the council establish camps for refugees forced to flee their homes, urging the council to take "long overdue steps" to help the suffering people.

"Apparently, I was wrong about my expectations," he told the council. "This meeting will not even end with a presidential or press statement, let alone a robust resolution."

The path to the council's agreement on a safe zone for Syrians is fraught with obstacles, headed by the reluctance of Russia and China, Syria's most important allies. The countries have vetoed three Western-backed resolutions in the Security Council seeking to pressure President Bashar Assad's government with the threat of sanctions.

Moscow and Beijing were highly critical of the no-fly zone established by NATO to protect civilians during last year's Libyan revolt against longtime dictator Moammar Gadhafi, saying its enforcement went beyond the Security Council mandate. Western diplomats said enforcing the zone required taking out Libya's air defenses and attacking tanks and military vehicles that posed threats to civilians.

Before Thursday's meeting, Britain and France announced new funding for refugees and offered support for more aggressive action, including a military-enforced no-fly zone to protect a safe area for those fleeing the war.

"We are not ruling out any options for the future," Britain's Foreign Secretary William Hague told a news conference.

Hague said safe zones should remain an option, although he didn't say when they might be seriously considered.

"We do not know how this crisis will develop ... over the coming months. It is steadily getting worse," Hague said. "We are ruling nothing out, and we have contingency planning for a wide range of scenarios."

Britain and France are veto-wielding members of the Security Council as well as key NATO members. Asked whether the options would include a NATO-enforced no-fly zone, without Security Council authorization, Hague reiterated; "We are not ruling out any options."

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said France and the United Kingdom's views are in "complete unity."

"All the possibilities are before us," he said when asked about the proposal by Turkey, also a NATO member. "We can't just say yes or no off the bat. We have to discuss it."

In his speech, the Turkish minister told the council that that the camps established for fleeing Syrians "should have full protection."

Davutoglu also called on the council to visit refugee camps in neighboring countries, to adopt a unified response to stop the indiscriminate bombing of residential areas, and to solve the issue of Syrians displaced from their homes and trapped within the country.

Davutoglu mentioned examples of "the cost of procrastination" including the 1995 Serb massacre in Bosnia of more than 8,000 Muslims taken from a U.N. enclave in Srebrenica and Saddam Hussein's gassing of 5,000 people in the Kurdish village of Halabja in 1988.

Clearly referring to the council divisions, Davutoglu said the Cold War is over and it's time to put aside the mindset, "sterile power struggles and competition of interests" emanating from that era.

U.N. refugee chief Antonio Guterres warned the council against safe zones.

He praised Syria's neighbors for keeping their borders open to Syrians fleeing the war, and said their right to asylum "must not be jeopardized, for instance through the establishment of so-called 'safe havens' or other similar arrangements."

"Bitter experience has shown that it is rarely possible to provide effective protection and security in such areas," Guterres said.

U.N. Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson also cautioned that proposals for humanitarian corridors or buffer zones inside Syria "raise serious questions and require careful and critical consideration."

Eliasson said more than 2.5 million people ? including Palestinian and Iraqi refugees ? "are now in grave need of assistance and protection inside Syria," more than double the number reported in March. Guterres said as of Wednesday, 229,000 people had left Syria and registered as refugees in Turkey, Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq.

He said the U.N. humanitarian appeal for Syria seeking $180 million is only half-funded.

"Donors should urgently rise to this humanitarian imperative," Eliasson said. "Hundreds of thousands of lives are at stake."

Hague announced that Britain will contribute an additional 3 million pounds ($4.7 million), to the 27 million pounds ($42.7 million) it has already given for humanitarian aid to the displaced and to refugees. Fabius announced that France was giving 5 million Euros ($6.27 million) in addition to the $20 million Euros ($25 million) it has already contributed.

Fabius said the two countries also want to encourage Syrians to defect and Hague urged them to do it sooner rather than later to avoid possible future war crimes prosecution.

The ministers said Britain and France are also working on plans for a transition and for a post-Assad era.

Fabius said there is a clear message to the Syrian people: "Assad will fall but we won't drop you."

U.S. astronaut Neil Armstrong, first man to walk on the moon, dies

ScienceDaily (Aug. 25, 2012) ? Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon during the 1969 Apollo 11 mission, has died, following complications resulting from cardiovascular procedures. He was 82.

Armstrong's words "That is one small step for (a) man, one giant leap for mankind," spoken on July 20, 1969, as he became the first person ever to step onto another planetary body, instantly became a part of history.

Those few words from the Sea of Tranquillity were the climactic fulfillment of the efforts and hopes of millions of people and the expenditure of billions of dollars. A plaque on one of the lander's legs that concluded "We came in peace for all mankind," further emphasized that Armstrong and fellow astronaut Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin were there as representatives of all humans.

Armstrong is survived by his wife, two sons, a stepson, a stepdaughter, 10 grandchildren, and a brother and sister.

"Neil Armstrong was a hero not just of his time, but of all time," said President Barack Obama. "Thank you, Neil, for showing us the power of one small step."

Armstrong's family released the following statement on Saturday:

"Neil Armstrong was also a reluctant American hero who always believed he was just doing his job. He served his Nation proudly, as a navy fighter pilot, test pilot, and astronaut. He also found success back home in his native Ohio in business and academia, and became a community leader in Cincinnati. ...

"While we mourn the loss of a very good man, we also celebrate his remarkable life and hope that it serves as an example to young people around the world to work hard to make their dreams come true, to be willing to explore and push the limits, and to selflessly serve a cause greater than themselves."

The family will be providing further updates at www.neilarmstronginfo.com .

"As long as there are history books, Neil Armstrong will be included in them, remembered for taking humankind's first small step on a world beyond our own," said NASA Administrator Charles Bolden.

"Besides being one of America's greatest explorers," Bolden added, "Neil carried himself with a grace and humility that was an example to us all."

Apollo 11 lunar module pilot and fellow moonwalker Buzz Aldrin on Armstrong's passing: "I am very saddened to learn of the passing of Neil Armstrong today. Neil and I trained together as technical partners but were also good friends who will always be connected through our participation in the Apollo 11 mission. Whenever I look at the moon it reminds me of the moment over four decades ago when I realized that even though we were farther away from earth than two humans had ever been, we were not alone."

Apollo 11 command module pilot Michael Collins said simply, "He was the best, and I will miss him terribly."

"The passing of Neil Armstrong has shocked all of us at the Johnson Space Center," said Center Director Michael Coats. The whole world knew Neil as the first man to step foot on the Moon, but to us he was a co-worker, a friend, and an outstanding spokesman for the Human Space Program. His quiet confidence and ability to perform under pressure set an example for all subsequent astronauts. Our role model will be missed."

"Neil Armstrong was a very personal inspiration to all of us within the astronaut office," said Bob Behnken, Chief of NASA's Astronaut Office. "His historic step onto the Moon's surface was the foundation for many of our personal dreams to become astronauts. The only thing that outshone his accomplishments was his humility about those accomplishments. We will miss him as a friend, mentor, explorer and ambassador for the American spirit of ingenuity."

Armstrong's single sentence, though it was focused above the national divisions and quarrels of Earth, still signified unquestionably the U.S. victory in the desperate space race with the Soviet Union.

Neil A. Armstrong was born Aug. 5, 1930, in Wapakoneta, Ohio. He earned an aeronautical engineering degree from Purdue University and a master's in aerospace engineering from the University of Southern California.

He was a naval aviator from 1949 to 1952. During the Korean War he flew 78 combat missions.

In 1955 he joined the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), NASA's predecessor, as a research pilot at Lewis Laboratory in Cleveland.

Armstrong later transferred to NACA's High Speed Flight Research Station at Edwards AFB, Calif. As project pilot, he was in the forefront of the development of many high-speed aircraft, including the X-15, which flew at 4,000 mph.

He flew more than 200 aircraft models. They included jet and rocket-powered planes, helicopters and gliders.

Armstrong was selected as an astronaut in 1962.

His first space flight was Gemini 8, which he commanded. He was the first civilian to fly a U.S. spacecraft. With fellow astronaut David R. Scott, Armstrong performed the first docking in space, with an Agena target satellite.

Less than an hour later their spacecraft began an unplanned rolling motion. After undocking, it increased to one revolution per second. One of the Gemini's 16 thrusters had stuck open because of an electrical short circuit.

Armstrong used re-entry thrusters to control the capsule, and after a 30-minute struggle, it was stabilized. Flight rules required a return to Earth after use of the re-entry thrusters, so the crewmembers fired retrorockets that sent Gemini 8 to a contingency landing zone in the Western Pacific.

The eventful flight on March 16, 1966, had taken just over 10 hours, 41 minutes.

Apollo 11 lifted off on July 16, 1969, with Armstrong, Aldrin and Mike Collins aboard. Collins remained in lunar orbit in the command module while Armstrong and Aldrin descended in the lunar module they had named Eagle to their historic landing on the moon's surface.

"Houston, Tranquillity Base here. The Eagle has landed," Armstrong said, telling a tense and waiting Earth that men had finally reached the lunar surface.

He and Aldrin spent about two hours exploring, gathering more than 50 pounds of moon rocks and setting up three scientific experiments. The next day, after 21 hours and 37 minutes on the moon, they fired Eagle's engine to begin the return to Collins and the command module.

The crew returned to Earth, landing near the USS Hornet in the Pacific after a mission of just over eight days. President Richard M. Nixon was on the aircraft carrier's deck to welcome them.

"This is the greatest week in the history of the world since the creation," Nixon told the three.

After 16 days in quarantine to protect Earth from any returned moon germs, the crew went on U.S. and international tours. Millions greeted them as heroes.

Armstrong later served as deputy associate administrator for aeronautics in the Office of Advanced Research and technology at NASA Headquarters. He resigned from the space agency in 1971. As a professor at the University of Cincinnati from 1971 to 1979, he was involved in both teaching and research.

He later went into the business world. Among other positions, he served for 10 years as chairman of Computing Technologies for Aviation Inc. of Charlottesville, Va. and later as chairman of AIL Systems Inc., an electronic systems company based in Deer Park, N.Y.

Armstrong was a fellow of the Society of Experimental Test Pilots and the Royal Aeronautical Society, and an honorary fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and the International Astronautical Federation.

He was a member of the National Academy of Engineering. He served as a member of the National Commission on Space in 1985 and 1986, and in 1985 was vice chairman of the Presidential Commission on the Space Shuttle Challenger Accident. He also was chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee for the Peace Corps from 1971 to 1973.

Seventeen countries decorated Armstrong. He received many special honors, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Congressional Space Medal of Honor, NASA's Ambassador of Exploration Award, the Explorers Club Medal, the Robert H. Goddard Memorial Trophy, the NASA Distinguished Service Medal, the Harmon International Aviation Trophy, the Royal Geographic Society's Gold Medal, the Federation Aeronautique Internationale's Gold Space Medal, the American Astronautical Society Flight Achievement Award, the Robert J. Collier Trophy, the AIAA Astronautics Award, the Octave Chanute Award, and the John J. Montgomery Award.

(AP) ? When man first harnessed fire, no one recorded it. When the Wright Brothers showed man could fly, only a handful of people witnessed it. But when Neil Armstrong took that first small step on the moon in July 1969, an entire globe watched in grainy black-and-white from a quarter million miles away

We saw it. We were part of it. He took that "giant leap for mankind" for us.

Although more than half of the world's population wasn't alive then, it was an event that changed and expanded the globe.

"It's a human achievement that will be remembered forever," said John Logsdon, professor emeritus of space policy at George Washington University. Those first steps were beamed to nearly every country around the world, thanks to a recently launched satellite. It was truly the first global mass media event, Logsdon said. An estimated 600 million people ? 1 out of every 5 on the planet ? watched.

The two historical events likely to be long remembered from the 20th Century are the moon landing and the first atomic bomb, said Smithsonian Institution space curator Roger Launius.

"There is no way to overestimate that significance in human history and he is forever linked to that," Launius said of Armstrong, who died Saturday at age 82.

??????????????? Just as the voyage of Christopher Columbus split historic eras 500 years ago, so will Neil Armstrong and Apollo 11, said Rice University historian Douglas Brinkley, a specialist in 20th Century history.

??????????????? "We may be living in the age of Armstrong," said Brinkley, who conducted oral histories for NASA, including sessions with Armstrong.

The late science fiction author Arthur C. Clarke wrote that the Apollo 11 moon landing was "one of the great divides in human history; we are sundered from it forever by the moment when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin stepped out on to the Sea of Tranquility. Now history and fiction have become inexorably intertwined."

Since that day, there's been a common phrase: "If we can send a man to the moon, why can't we ... ?" with the blank filled with a task that seems far less difficult.

Armstrong's small step was that leap in confidence telling the world "if we can do this, we can do anything," said Howard McCurdy, a professor of space and public policy at American University and author of the book "Space and the American Imagination."

"He took something that 20 years earlier was pure fantasy and turned it into reality and if we could do that for space we could do it for anything," McCurdy said Saturday.

The Apollo 11 moon landing was the finish line in a decade-long space race started by the Soviet Union. And so the first steps on the moon coming from an American civilian had many meanings. Getting there first showed American technological superiority, but Armstrong mentioned mankind ? not Americans ? demonstrating that this was a moment for the people of Earth, McCurdy said.

Armstrong and Aldrin left a plaque on the moon that read:? "Here men from the planet Earth first set foot upon the moon. July 1969 A.D. We came in peace for all mankind."

For all mankind. And that's how the world took it.

"The success for America (is a) success for every living man" reported the Swahili-language newspaper Nguromo of Dar.

And if that wasn't enough, Armstrong and Aldrin also left a patch to commemorate NASA astronauts and Soviet cosmonauts who had died in pursuit of space.

"It was special and memorable but it was only instantaneous because there was work to do," Armstrong told an Australian television interviewer this year.

The Cold War may have slightly muted the significance of the event at the time, but over the years the importance of the moon landing has only grown, Logsdon said.

It's permeated into culture. The moon landing is in movies, television, books, songs and it was even Michael Jackson's signature dance step. That's probably because in some ways that moonwalk touched something that has been hard-wired into humanity: the need to explore. For 25,000 years, humans have been migrating and pushing into new places. Armstrong took it to new heights.

John Glenn, the first American to orbit the Earth, noted it was "the first time any human being set foot on a place other than Earth, and that's a pretty big step."

Neil Armstrong, First Man to Walk on Moon, Dies at 82

Astronaut and American icon Neil Armstrong, the first person ever to set foot on the moon, has died at the age of 82.

Armstrong, who stepped onto the lunar surface on July 20, 1969 as commander of NASA's Apollo 11 mission, died Saturday (Aug. 25). The news was first reported by NBC News and confirmed in a statement by the Armstrong family. He had undergone a cardiac bypass operation on Aug. 7, two days after his 82nd birthday.

The astronaut uttered one of the most famous phrases in human history upon making his extraterrestrial foray: "That's one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind."

Armstrong and Apollo 11 lunar module pilot Buzz Aldrin spent 21 hours and 36 minutes on the moon and performed the first-ever moonwalk during their historic mission. Five more Apollo moon landings would follow before the program ended in 1972.

After returning to Earth, Armstrong taught aerospace engineering at the University of Cincinnati and later served as chairman of the Virginia-based Computing Technologies for Aviation, Inc., according to NASA. He and his wife, Carol, made their home in the Cincinnati area.

Neil Armstrong rarely returned to the spotlight, though he recently spoke at several congressional hearings on the future of NASA's human spaceflight program.

In November 2011, Armstrong and his Apollo 11 crewmates Aldrin and Michael Collins received the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest award Congress gives out. Former astronaut John Glenn, the first American to orbit Earth, also received the award during the ceremony.

"While we mourn the loss of a very good man, we also celebrate his remarkable life and hope that it serves as an example to young people around the world to work hard to make their dreams come true, to be willing to explore and push the limits, and to selflessly serve a cause greater than themselves," Armstrong's family said in the statement.

"For those who may ask what they can do to honor Neil, we have a simple request. Honor his example of service, accomplishment and modesty, and the next time you walk outside on a clear night and see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink," the statement added.

Iran, UN nuclear watchdog fail to strike a - World News Tomorrow

    World News

WORLD NEWS ? DUSHANBE, The UN nuclear watchdog and Iran failed on August 24 to strike a deal aimed at allaying concerns about suspected nuclear weapons research by Tehran, a setback in efforts to resolve the stand-off diplomatically before any Israeli or U.S. military action, Reuters reports.

A flurry of bellicose rhetoric from some Israeli politicians this month has fanned speculation that Israel might hit Iran?s nuclear sites before the U.S. presidential election in November.

According to Reuters, tensions rose another notch on the eve of Friday?s talks between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) when diplomatic sources said Iran had installed many more uranium enrichment centrifuges at its Fordow underground site.

While the new machines are not yet operating, the move reaffirmed Iranian defiance of international demands on it to suspend enrichment and may strengthen the Israeli belief that toughened sanctions and concerted diplomacy are failing to make the Islamic Republic change course.

?The discussions today were intensive but important differences remain between Iran and the UN that prevented agreement,? Herman Nackaerts, the IAEA?s chief inspector, told journalists after about seven hours of talks with an Iranian delegation in Vienna.? ?At the moment we have no plans for another meeting.?

Little headway appeared to have been made on the IAEA?s most urgent request ? access for its inspectors to the Parchin military site where the agency believes Iran has done explosives tests relevant for developing a nuclear weapons capability.

Iran?s ambassador to the Vienna-based IAEA, Ali Asghar Soltanieh, said that ?undoubtedly some progress? was made but that differences remained.? ?Because it is a very complex issue ? issues related to national security of a member state are something very delicate,? the veteran Iranian diplomat said.? ?But I have to say that we are moving forward ? and we are going to continue this process so that we at the end of the day will have a framework agreed by both sides.?? Soltanieh had said before the talks began: ?Both sides are trying to bridge the gap.?

The diplomatic sources who revealed the expansion of centrifuge capacity at Fordow also said satellite imagery indicated Iran had used a brightly colored tent-like structure to cover a building at Parchin, increasing concern about a possible removal of evidence of illicit past nuclear work there.

Israel signaled its patience with diplomacy was fading.? ?Only yesterday we received additional proof that Iran is continuing accelerated progress towards achieving nuclear weapons and is totally ignoring international demands,? Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said before the talks ended.

But in Washington, an official of President Barack Obama?s administration said the new centrifuges, while concerning, would not significantly change the amount of time Iran would need to ?break out? of its treaty obligations and construct a nuclear device.? ?This work ? does not build confidence in their intent and it further demonstrates their failure to fulfill their obligations,? said the official, speaking on condition of anonymity.? ?But, it is also not a game-changer.?

Iran, Israel?s arch-enemy and the world?s No. 5 oil exporter, insists it wants nuclear energy for more electricity to serve a rapidly growing population, not nuclear weapons, and has threatened wide-ranging reprisals if attacked.

Nackaerts, the IAEA?s global chief of inspections, said before the meeting that the broader goal was a deal on greater, overall inspector access to answer the UN watchdog?s questions about possible military dimensions to Iran?s nuclear program.

It was the first meeting between the two sides since discussions in early June petered out inconclusively, dashing previous hopes that an accord might be on the cards.

Friday?s talks were separate from Tehran?s negotiations with six world powers that have made little progress since resuming in April after a 15-month hiatus, but the focus on suspicions about Iran?s nuclear ambitions means they are still closely linked.

Washington has said there is still time for diplomatic pressure to work in pressing Iran to curb its enrichment program, which is the immediate priority of the six powers ? the United States, Britain, Russia, China, France and Germany.

    Symplified

Symplified is a cloud platform that allows small businesses to manage all the cloud-based services and applications employees are using, such as Google Apps, Salesforce.com, SuccessFactors, and Concur. IT often struggle to track all the applications an employee was using and revoke access in a timely manner when the employee leaves. An identity access management (IAM) product such as Symplified would actually make the revocation process almost one-to-three because it tracks all user-related information.?

With this service, the IT department can control which employees have access to certain cloud applications, revoke access when they leave, and use Microsoft Active Directory to link cloud services with on-premise applications.?Symplified is also useful for knowing who is accessing which applications. Imagine being able to adjust license costs because IT can tell that 15 people in Marketing never logged into a service that costs the company on a per-user basis. Symplified really does simplify identity management for IT.

Cloud-based IAM tools let a company track employees' user names, passwords, and permissions for various applications. When the employee leaves the company, the IT department just needs to remove that profile, all accounts that employee had on various services are immediately revoked. IT departments can also turn on single sign-on to streamline the login process as well as enforce internal security policies, such as password strength, on external services.

Several vendors are trying to solve the problem of knowing what services employees are using, including Okta, Ping Identity, Symantec, Cisco, RSA, SecureAuth and, of course, Symplified. Symplified has customers in various sectors of the industry, including health care, financial services, manufacturing and telecommunications.

Pricing-wise, Symplified ONE follows the cloud model, allowing the business to pay only for the employees actually being managed. Pricing varies on number of users being licensed, ranging from $1 to $8 per user?though Symplified's pricing is flexible and can be adjusted for deployment type.

    Getting Started
Symplified is available as a hosted offering. Businesses interested in the Symplified service but not comfortable with the cloud platform can opt to install an "identity router" locally within their own data center. On the flip side, cloud-happy businesses using Amazon EC2 can select the available Symplified image. For this review, I stuck with the hosted platform, and Symplified worked with me to create an environment linked to a few services.

In the end, I tried out four different "roles" on the platform: the IT administrator controlling the platform and security policies, two end users from different departments, in this case Sales and Marketing, and a senior level user such as a vice-president who would have more account privileges. The linked applications in my test were Box.net, Jive, Google Apps, LinkedIn, Salesforce, and Taleo.

    Connecting Applications with Users
Symplified supports both SAML and non-SAML applications. The Security Assertion Markup Language is an XML-based protocol for exchanging authentication and authorization data, but many Web applications don't have it enabled. The company has a pre-built "Trust Fabric" which contains connectors to hundreds of popular SAML applications such as Google Apps, Salesforce, Taleo. There are connectors that would work with custom on-premise apps built with Java, .NET, Ruby on Rails, and other Web architectures, as well.

Non-SAML applications, such as Box.com, are added to the platform by using a one-time keychain to track user credentials.?If a cloud application happens to not be in the Trust Fabric, Symplified said customers can use the Trust Connector tool to set up a single-signon connection for that application.

Sony Music Unlimited (for PlayStation Vita)

Sony Music Unlimited represents a rare thing?a streaming music service that's available on a portable gaming device. Certainly, handhelds aren't required to have them?gaming is the focus, after all?but it's very cool to stream your favorite songs and compositions over 3G and Wi-Fi as you're passing time in a waiting room or zoning out on a commute. That said, Sony Music Unlimited lacks a free option, so you must pay a premium (starting at $3.99 per month). Considering that there's no Slacker or Songza available on gaming units at this time (streaming music services with quality free options), it may be worth the investment if you're a PlayStation Vita ?owner.

    The Basics, Interface
Sony Music Unlimited offers a library of over 15 millions of songs on demand for those willing to pay the $9.99 per month Premium subscription. A lower-priced Basic membership is available for $3.99 per month, but it lacks on-demand playback, library building, playlist building, some genre-based channels, and other features that make Premium accounts worthwhile. Sony offers a 30-day trial if you want to dip your toe into the pool, but the lack of a truly free offering is a downer.

The interface consists of album art arranged into five rows: A top spot (that rotates between Top Songs, Top Artists, and Top Albums), Recently Played Channels, Newly Added to My Library, New Releases, and You Might Like, the app's recommendation area. Navigation is a simple as swiping between rows and icons with a finger.

    The Listening Experience
Tapping a song icon starts the music playback and displays the album art, song title, artist name, and runtime. There are also options that let you like or dislike a song, as well as add the song (or entire album) to a playlist or My Library. You can also cache those added songs for offline playback?a handy feature if you're outside 3G or Wi-Fi signal range. A column in the right portion of the screen houses related music that you should check out. The Home button in the upper-right hand portion of the screen reveals a menu bar with shortcuts that let you quickly jump between areas.

Sony Music Unlimited's audio quality is surprising good, whether you listen through headphones or the PS Vita's speakers, and the tracks played smoothly over our office Wi-Fi connection. The music selection is impressive?I've found every album from The Dirtbombs, an indie Detroit-based rock band. There's comedy, too; Patton Oswald's three major comedy albums are also in the library, as well as other acts. Unfortunately, Sony Music Unlimited only has two of Joe Rogan's handful of comedy discs, so there are some gaps in the library.

On the upside, playlists sync between the mobile app and the browser-based app, so your Sony Music Unlimited Experience remains the same across platforms.

    Nearly Unlimited Joy
Sonic Music Unlimited is the lone streaming music service on the PS Vita?that alone makes it worth a look if you're into such things. That said, you need to plop down $9.99 per month if you want to get the most out of the service. If you do, you shouldn't be disappointed, despite a few album omissions.

Updated at 11:35 a.m. ET: OSLO -- A Norwegian court ruled Friday that confessed mass killer Anders Behring Breivik was sane, deciding he was criminally responsible for the massacre of 77 people last summer.

Reading the ruling, Judge Wenche Elisabeth Arntzen said that?"in a unanimous decision ... the court sentences the defendant to 21 years of preventive detention."?

However, such sentences can be extended under Norwegian law as long as an inmate is considered dangerous.?Experts have said Breivik is likely to spend the rest of his life behind bars.?Norway doesn't have the death penalty.

Prosecutors had demanded a verdict of insanity, a fate Breivik called "worse than death," while many of his victims had said only a sane person could have carried out such a complex attack.?

Breivik, 33, detonated a fertilizer bomb outside a government building that included the prime ministerial offices last July, killing eight, then gunned down 69 people, mostly teenagers, at the ruling Labor Party's youth camp on Utoya island.

After the ruling, Breivik told the court he would not appeal the decision.

"He is getting what he deserves," Alexandra Peltre, 18, whom Breivik shot in the thigh on Utoya, told Reuters. "This is karma striking back at him. I do not care if he is insane or not, as long as he gets the punishment that he deserves."?

Another survivor of the massacre, Eivind Rindal, told the Norwegian newspaper VG that ?it is important that the defendant gets his punishment but the most important thing is that he never gets out.?

?There are many who shared his extreme views in our society,? Rindal added, according to an English translation in the Telegraph newspaper.

Trine Aamodt, whose 19-year-old son was shot at Utoya, told VG she was ?happy with the verdict of sanity and am also very glad that there was consensus from all the judges.?

    Guilt never a question
Guilt had never been a question in the trial as Breivik described in chilling detail how he hunted down his victims, some as young as 14, with a shot to the body and then one or more bullets to the head.

The killings shook this nation of five million people which had prided itself as a haven from much of the world's troubles, raising questions about the prevalence of far-right views as immigration rises.

Tens of thousands of people gathered in Oslo to sing a children's song calling for peace, as a protest against mass killer Anders Behring Breivik. Msnbc.com's Dara Brown reports.

Few believe anyone would ever sign Breivik's release papers.?One of the reasons Breivik's attacks were presented in such gruesome detail during the trial was so that the horror of Oslo and Utoya would be well-documented for the day Breivik asks to be released.

The court?s ruling actually imposed a minimum sentence of 10 years and a maximum of 21.

But Jo Stigen, a law professor at the University of Oslo, told NBCNews.com that Breivik was unlikely to be released for decades.

?This means as long as he is dangerous he will not be free. It?s a potential life sentence ? I can hardly see it will be considered he?s not dangerous in 30 or 40 years,? he said, speaking by phone from outside the court.

Labor Party secretary Raymond Johansen, center, hugs a relative of an Utoya massacre victim before Breivik's arrival in court on Friday.

After serving the 10-year minimum sentence, Breivik will be evaluated periodically. Stigen said it was ?theoretically possible? he could be released in 10 years, but added this was highly unlikely.

After 21 years, the prosecution can seek to have Breivik kept in prison -- Stigen said that ?most certainly they will? ? and a court will then decide whether to keep the mass killer in prison.

    'Tough year'
The trial and a commission of investigation into the country's worst violence since World War Two have kept Breivik on the front pages for the past 13 months and survivors said the verdict would finally bring some closure.

"It has been a tough year... but I don't want to be Utoya-Nicoline for the rest of my life," said Nicoline Bjerge Schie, a survivor of the shooting, ahead of the verdict.

Friends and family of his victims looked on Friday as Anders Breivik calmly describes chasing down and killing dozens of teenagers during a shooting spree last year on Utoya Island in Norway. Msnbc.com's Al Stirrett reports.

As a result of the ruling that he is sane, Breivik will be locked up in solitary confinement inside the maximum security Ila prison on the outskirts of Oslo.?He will return to his relatively spacious cells, enjoying the comforts of a computer, newspapers and a separate exercise room.

Anders Breivik to Norway court: I killed 77 people but am not guilty

One team of court appointed psychiatrists concluded Breivik was psychotic while another came to the opposite conclusion. To make the ruling more difficult, several other experts who testified described a series of mental conditions Breivik suffered from.

Polls showed that around 70 percent of Norwegians thought such a well-planned attack could not have been the work of a madman and Breivik must take responsibility rather than be dismissed as merely deranged.

The nation looks to rally after a bombing and shooting spree leaves 77 people dead.

Breivik himself argued for a verdict of sanity as he wanted the attack to be seen as a political statement rather than an act of lunacy.

He rejected criminal charges out of principle, saying he doesn't recognize the court's authority because it represents a political system that supports multiculturalism -- the reason why he targeted the Labor Party.
