The Post published Injury-hit BMX ace Liam Phillips confident of making London 2012

BMX ace Liam Phillips is confident of Olympic success after a crash threatened to wreck his London 2012 dream.

The 23-year-old from Burnham-on-Sea, Somerset, pictured, won a time-trial silver medal at May's BMX World Championships in Birmingham, but a day later in the super cross Olympic event tumbled over his handlebars and suffered a fractured collarbone.

The injury cast doubt on his participation in the Olympic BMX event, which begins on August 8, but Phillips was nonetheless confirmed in the Great Britain team when the cycling squad was announced last week.

Phillips had just one pre-scheduled week off after the World Championships and has been working on the stationary bike to retain his fitness ? and hopefully his form.

"My legs aren't going anywhere," Phillips, for whom London will be his second Games, told Press Association Sport.

"If anything I'm going to go into competition in even better form than I was for the worlds.

"It's just a case of getting the shoulder healed properly and getting back on the bike.

"If I can get myself back in the shape that I was in at the World Championships that's all that I can ask and I'll be there or thereabouts.

"That's the biggest task, finding that form. I don't feel I need to go over and above that form in Birmingham.

"Getting back to that level is what's expected and is going to put me right up there with the group that are going to be challenging for medals. I'm confident that I have enough time."

One of the compelling elements of BMX is the prospect of crashes. Spectators relish it and, while riders do not, Phillips understands the attraction.

Miami Heat victory parade set for Monday

The Miami Herald

Gulp up the java Miami Heat fans ? today?s a day for celebrating, and chest-thumping.

And coming soon...a parade!

The Heat?s championship glow hovered over a bleary-eyed South Florida on Friday, as fans descended upon sporting goods stores to snatch up commemorative T-shirts and hats. The stop-and-go morning commute was spiced up by sports radio blaring Queen?s ?We Are The Champions.?

Victory parade festivities are set to begin at 9 a.m. Monday, with the actual parade starting at 11 a.m. and ending at Noon. At 12:30 p.m., the team will go inside AmericanAirlines Arena for an additional private celebration reserved for season-ticket holders.

Here?s the parade route: it begins at the corner of S.E. 8th Street and 2nd Avenue, heading east on 8th Street, then north on Brickell Avenue across the bridge, and north on Biscayne Boulevard to the arena.

For Heat fan Gerardo Rodriguez, the Finals triumph erased the ghosts of last year, when the Heat lost the Finals in 6 games to the Dallas Mavericks. Rodriguez lives in Dallas, and as Heat Nation sulked after last year?s outcome, Rodriguez had to endure the further indignity of being surrounded by the enemy. He was even forced to watch the Dallas victory parade, which passed right by the restaurant where he worked.

?It was tough,? Rodriguez said. ?I wouldn?t say it felt like a nightmare, but it was pretty close.?

This year, though, Rodriguez is planning his first-ever visit to Miami so he can watch the Heat?s victory parade.

?I even converted my girlfriend into a Heat fan,? Rodriguez said. ?She loves D-Wade.?

Heat star Dwyane Wade began the morning with this Tweet: ?WOW..God is good..congrats to the city of Miami... yall deserve this moment...WORLD CHAMPION..#TeamNoSleep I love you guys..?

Later in the day, Finals MVP LeBron James tweeted: ?OMFG I think it just hit me, I?m a CHAMPION!! I AM a CHAMPION!!?

Elsewhere in the Twitterverse, global trending topics included ?Bird Road? ? an homage to the street?s reputation as Miami?s post-game street celebration headquarters.

The night before, Game 5?s lopsided score made the outcome a foregone conclusion, but at the Clevelander in South Beach, they counted down the game?s final seconds like it was New Year?s Eve nonetheless.

When the clock hit all zeroes, the pool bar exploded with screams, hugs and high-fives.

Miami Heat, NBA champions. Drink it up and soak it in.

?All I do is win,? DJ Khaled?s tune blared out over the PA, and never did it seem more apt.

?LeBron [James] did it,? said Jeff Hall, a Heat fan from Washington who traveled to South Florida for the NBA Finals. ?They said he couldn?t do it, but he came to Miami and he brought home a ring. This is incredible.?

The thunderous celebration echoed across South Florida. In households, sidewalks and street corners from coast to swamp, how did fans celebrate the second title in franchise history?

With pots, pans, baking sheets, ladles, spoons and any kind of kitchen utensil that made noise. Lots and lots of noise.

As a Heat win became inevitable, the sidewalks of West 49th Street in Hialeah swelled with fans in Heat jerseys, chanting and cheering, ?Let?s go Heat!?

Cars added to the calamity, laying on their horns as they crept by. A man on a motorcycle revved his engine.

Movie Review: Seeking a Friend for the End of the World is the ...

Location

Wide Release

Dates

Opens June 22

What if an asteroid were on a collision course with Earth and only 21 days remained before the end of days? What would you do? Reunite with family and spend your final hours letting everyone you care about know how much you love them? Or gorge on all your favorite foods, sleep with anybody who would have you, and try illicit drugs like heroin, because why the hell not?

Seeking a Friend For the End of the World is about an insurance agent named Dodge (Steve Carell) who long ago surrendered himself to the comfort and security afforded by the monotony of an ordinary existence. He?s not equipped to face exciting new opportunities, let alone the apocalypse. So he keeps driving in to work, even as his office is emptier each day.

Writer-director Lorene Scafaria mines some solid comedy from this material. Hers is not a realistic portrayal of the end times. With only 21 days left for mankind, Dodge?s company announces that employees should feel free to wear ?casual Friday? clothes any day of the week. Dodge?s cleaning lady keeps coming to his apartment; when he tells her it?s no longer necessary, she thinks she?s being fired. These moments are exaggerated for comic effect, to be sure, but there?s a kernel of truth there. Faced with tragedy, some of us cling even tighter to our routines.

Others, like Dodge?s friends Warren (Rob Corddry) and Diane (Connie Britton) feel like it?s time to party. They throw a ?last supper? that involves plentiful sexual opportunities, rampant drug use, and guests playing with fire. Dodge attends but doesn?t participate in the debauchery. Instead, since there is no future, he turns to his past. He rummages through a box full of mementos of Olivia, his high school sweetheart, the ?one that got away.?

But suddenly Penny (Keira Knightley) enters his life. She?s younger, vivacious, and?more optimistic than he is. She encourages him to track down Olivia before they?re out of time, and he says he knows someone with a plane who can get her home to England to see her parents (by this point all commercial airlines have shut down.) Seeking a Friend then morphs into a road trip movie, and later a surprisingly ardent romance.

The comic scenes are broad, playing like full-on farce ? as when Penny and Dodge stop to eat at a roadside steakhouse where the entire staff is high on ecstasy. Meanwhile the romantic scenes, as the couple?s relationship develops, have a surprisingly sincere and serious-minded tone. These two aspects of the film don?t entirely mesh together ? they even undermine each other ? which left me unconvinced and unmoved by the romance.

This becomes a bit of a problem because at the end of the day, of course, it?s all about love.

Obtaining Car Finance With Bad Credit | ONLINE BUSINESS TIPS

Many people got adverse credit ratings with the Great Recession by means of little or no fault that belongs to them. Should you want a car when youve got a low credit score, you can get a Bad Credit Auto Loans. Acquiring one is easy, as all you must do is bear in mind several sensible bits of advice.

Fix your credit standing

This seems like a Catch 22 type of predicament. All things considered, the reason why you cant purchase a car is the low credit history. Youll still need a car, though. So just why are you really being told to fix your credit score, first?

This actually holds only for individuals with really bad credit standing. A ?good? credit history typically has a FICO rating of 640 or much better (out of 850). A FICO that could be considered ?really bad? would be one under 500, since this informs dealers and possible creditors you might be a high monetary risk. Plenty of people and institutions that offer car finance with bad credit concentrate on a range of 500 to 600. Also, getting a low credit rating means you might be offered a car loan within a higher interest rate.

Fixing your credit history can be done by continuing to keep on top of payments faithfully, even when you ought to restructure some of them with the debtors. Ending dead accounts can be yet another way to mend your score.

Whats your wages?

Another area lenders will take a look at is your pay. Consider, even though they are taking a chance lending to someone with a below-average credit score, these loan merchants still want the assurance you will shoulder the loan.

Your pay doesnt need to be high, and various loan companies have varying levels of income they will acknowledge. Some will offer a bad credit car loan to someone making as little as $1,600 to $2,000 a month. Some loan companies could possibly want a smaller or higher number than that.

Apart from the income, they will look at other commitments youve got, for instance a mortgage or scholarship debt you are hoping to repay. The lender is looking at your ability to repay the loan regularly once they do that assessment.

Ensure You Can Afford The Vehicle

The assumption is that you are acquiring a vehicle as soon as your finances are not too good simply because you need one. You could be moving into a locale where access to public transportation is just not good. Perhaps it really is cheaper in your case and your loved ones to go to school or work utilizing a car than public transit.

If you attempt to obtain a car you cant afford now, the lender will probably deny the application for Car Finance With Bad Credit. As a guide, your payment each month shouldnt go beyond %15 of the gross income, with %10 as the preferred amount. If you can moderately pay for this, you could be given the loan. If youre not, search for an alternative solution that amounted to less.

Duolingo

A fascinating new project from Carnegie Mellon University, Duolingo?(free) helps you learn a new language by asking you to participate in translating the Web. Users vote on the best translation submitted by other users, and eventually, the translated Web pages can be published so that more speakers of other languages can read them. It relies almost exclusively on crowd-sourcing, which may leave many language learners wondering if it's any good. How much can you trust translations that random people on the Internet write? The answer is: more than you think.

Duolingo has tremendous features that work surprisingly well at getting you to practice a language, and expose you to interesting content and people, and?is actually fun and interesting. Among free language-learning tools, Duolingo is PCMag's Editors' Choice.?

The language selection of this young project is currently limited to Spanish, German, and English (for Spanish speakers), with French in beta. Italian and Chinese are reportedly coming soon, and you should be as excited as I am for them to arrive.

How Duolingo Works
To get access to Duolingo, you can sign up with an email address and password, or authenticate via Facebook or Twitter. The, just pick which languages you want to learn: Spanish, German, and/or French. You can opt into as many language learning programs as you want.

I started Duolingo with Spanish, a language I've studied in the past but never mastered and have been trying to improve more recently, and couldn't be happier with the results. The Web app is fun to use and gives you real Web content to practice reading and translating.

If you want to study more than one language, you can elect the second one after you create an account (although the option isn't easy to find; I'd rather it were simply an option in the settings).

Duolingo keeps track of your progress and participation as you learn. When you sign in, a home screen shows you a roadmap of what you'll learn. Units along the roadmap appear gray until they're unlocked, at which time they become colorful, and a small trophy icon turns gold when you've completed and mastered a unit.?

You can't jump ahead. Each unit is locked until you level-up to it, and if you think you're too advanced for the Basic sections, you have to prove your abilities by taking a test to opt out.?

Language-Learning Components
Each of the units that you can see on the roadmap contain both language-learning components as well as translation exercises (explained in the next section).?

The language-learning parts are solid and replicate some of the typical drills you'll find in more well-known language software, like our two Editors' Choices, Rosetta Stone TOTALe ($249 for Level 1, 4 stars) and Rocket Languages Premium ($99.95 for lifetime membership, 4.5 stars). For example, on one screen, Duolingo will introduce you to a new word, usually in context with other words that you've already learned, and provide the translation. On the next screen, you might be asked to choose which article fits with a word, such as the masculine el or feminine la in Spanish. Two or three screens later, you might be asked to translate the word you learned previously. Duolingo's language-learning tools work because they help you build knowledge logically and slowly.?

You might complete a few dozen screens of exercises?fill-in-the-blanks, typed translations, listen-and-repeats with voice recognition, and so forth?before reaching a completion screen. The progress markers Duolingo uses couldn't be clearer, and they do an excellent job of orienting you and guiding you through the program.

Crowd-Sourced Answers
After you've proved your language skills to some degree, Duolingo invites you to help translate the Web, and this is where the project becomes very cool. You get to choose which pages you want to try and translate?a few options appear on virtual cards with a topic name to give you a sense of what it might contain?and the options are all theoretically within your reach based on your progress so far.?

When you select a card, Duolingo only gives you small snippets to translate, not the whole page. And while some of these sentences don't make sense out of the context of the whole page, there's always a link at the top to see the original source. For example, when I tried to translate a headline that word-for-word read, "Buddha Tire" (as in automobile tires), I clicked the source to see a blog post with a picture of car tires piled into the shape of a sitting Buddha. Ah ha.

As you translate each bit of text, Duolingo checks your writing against other submitted results, which you can see and rate. The site also compares your answer against the highest rated translation to give you a score (1 to 100). A good match doesn't have to be word-for-word the same, either, another reason Duolingo is a highly intelligent system.?

You earn points throughout for both completing the learning modules and translating text successfully. All of Duolingo's parts are tightly knitted together in this way.

The translations I encountered were still very challenging, but in a good way. I liked trying to read real writing, rather than sentences that are designed based on only the words and verb tenses I know. Language-learning software in general faces this problem, but at least with Duolingo, you're practicing with real content.?

How to Use Duolingo to Learn a Language
Duolingo is the only crowd-sourced language-learning service to get it right. It is by far one of the most exciting educational concepts I've seen. With Spanish, German, and English for speakers of Spanish already rolling strongly, I'm eagerly awaiting French to come out of beta, and for other languages to fill out the roster.?

Duolingo is undoubtedly one of the best free tools for practicing a new language?but not necessarily learning a new one from scratch. For that, it may be slightly too challenging for a lot of learners. To fully learn a new language, I do recommend picking up dedicated software that has been tested rigorously, like either of our two Editors' Choices?Rocket Language , Rosetta Stone?or even audio CDs from Pimsleur ($119, 3.5 stars). Pair any of those programs with Duolingo for practicing, and you're sure to learn a lot, fast.
