Did Leonardo da Vinci Copy His Famous "Vitruvian Man"?

News | More Science

An Italian architectural historian thinks Giacomo Andrea de Ferrera, a Renaissance architect and da Vinci friend, drew the man-in-circle diagram first

Leonardo da Vinci's drawing of a male figure perfectly inscribed in a circle and square, known as the "Vitruvian Man," illustrates what he believed to be a divine connection between the human form and the universe. Beloved for its beauty and symbolic power, it is one of the most famous images in the world. However, new research suggests that the work, which dates to 1490, may be a copy of an earlier drawing by Leonardo's friend.

Another illustration of a divinely proportioned man?the subject is Christ-like, but the setting is strikingly similar to Leonardo's?has been discovered in a forgotten manuscript in Ferrara, Italy. Both drawings are depictions of a passage written 1,500 years earlier by Vitruvius, an ancient Roman architect, in which he describes a man's body fitting perfectly inside a circle (the divine symbol) and inside a square (the earthly symbol). It was a geometric interpretation of the ancient belief that man is a "microcosm": a miniature embodiment of the whole universe. Leonardo and other scholars revived this vainglorious notion during the Italian Renaissance.

After decades of study, Claudio Sgarbi, an Italian architectural historian who discovered the lesser known illustration of the Vitruvian man in 1986, now believes it to be the work of Giacomo Andrea de Ferrara, a Renaissance architect, expert on Vitruvius, and close friend of Leonardo's. What's more, Sgarbi believes Giacomo Andrea probably drew his Vitruvian man first, though the two men are likely to have discussed their mutual efforts. Sgarbi will lay out his arguments in a volume of academic papers to be published this winter, Smithsonian Magazine reports.

The key arguments are as follows: In Leonardo's writings, he mentions "Giacomo Andrea's Vitruvius" ? seemingly a direct reference to the illustrated Ferrara manuscript. Secondly, Leonardo had dinner with Giacomo Andrea in July 1490, the year in which both men are thought to have drawn their Vitruvian men. Experts believe Leonardo would have probed Giacomo Andrea's knowledge of Vitruvius when they met. And though both drawings interpret Vitruvius' words similarly, Leonardo's is perfectly executed, while Giacomo Andrea's is full of false starts and revisions, none of which would have been necessary if he had simply copied Leonardo's depiction, rather than the other way around. [Early Christian Lead Codices Now Called Fakes]

Other scholars find the arguments convincing.

"I find Sgarbi's argument exciting and very seductive, to say the least," said Indra McEwen, an architectural historian at Concordia University who has written extensively about the works of Vitruvius. "But [I] would opt for the view that Giacomo Andrea and Leonardo worked in tandem, rather than Leonardo basing his drawing on Andrea's."

Rather than competitors, the two Renaissance men were colleagues working together to bring a beautiful, ancient idea back to life. "Whose was the 'original' drawing is a non-question as far as I'm concerned. ?Much as it is a preoccupation of our own time, I don't think it would have been an issue in Leonardo's day," McEwen told Life's Little Mysteries.

Patrice Le Floch-Prigent, an anatomist at the University of Versailles in France who has analyzed the anatomical correctness of Leonardo's famous work, noted that, for both drawings, "the source is Vitruvius."

African Union fails to elect new chief (Reuters)

ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) ? The African Union failed to elect a new head on Monday, highlighting the weakness of a group criticized for slow decision-making during political turmoil on the continent last year.

Former South African Foreign Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma was up against incumbent commission chairman Jean Ping of Gabon, who failed to win an outright majority in four rounds of voting.

The commission is the AU secretariat's top organ and the chair its public face.

Smaller countries said Zuma's candidacy broke an unwritten rule that the continent's dominant states do not contest the leadership. "South Africa's decision to do so turns everything upside down," a West African delegate said.

"You could say they may have not voted for Ping but the smaller countries are skeptical of the big countries," he said.

Analysts said Ping's attempts to juggle the diverse views of its 54 members had hampered decision-making on Libya after the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi.

"The weakness that Jean Ping had was not being forthcoming in putting his own opinion... the commission is a bureaucracy and it doesn't have its own position but that of member states," Mahari Taddele Maru, an African Union analyst at International Security Studies said.

The AU recognized the National Transitional Council as Libya's de facto government long after most European nations, the U.S. and Nigeria. A Libyan delegate, describing the AU as "indecisive up to the last moment," said the commission should be given more authority.

A member of the AU's communications team said after hours of deliberation in the new Chinese-built AU headquarters in the Ethiopian capital that Ping had won 32 votes in the last round, four short of the number needed for a majority.

The African Union has not yet made an official announcement.

SOUTH AFRICAN ROLE

South Africa, which has complained the United Nations needs to pay more attention to the pan-African body, especially when it comes to African crises, had pushed Zuma's candidacy hard, saying the AU needed the strong leadership she could give it.

"The incumbent could not win a two-thirds majority after four rounds so this is very very clear, that leaders of this continent want change and they want it now," said South African Foreign Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane.

She said the rules dictated that the deputy chairman, Kenya's Erastus Mwencha, would become interim chair until the next round of elections that would probably take place in six months at the next summit in Malawi.

South African President Jacob Zuma's failure to secure a majority for Dlamini-Zuma, his ex-wife, after Ping's much criticized tenure dealt a blow to South Africa, which regards itself as an emerging power championing African causes, but is seen by some other states as a step behind global affairs.

Envoys at climate talks in Durban last year criticized the largest economy in Africa for failing to get delegates to agree on a deal before two weeks of talks ended.

Pretoria also blocked a visit by the Dalai Lama to attend the 80th birthday of South African hero Desmond Tutu.

"President Zuma has been criticized for a weak foreign policy on Africa so he had to show his direction. This will be a crisis for him, that his first attempt to come up with a way to repair his policy has been defeated," Maru said.

Poll: Mitt, Obama tied in swing states (Politico)

In key swing states across the country, voters are evenly split in their preference between President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney, while they prefer the president over the other Republican candidates, according to a new USA Today/Gallup poll Monday.

In 12 swing states, Obama and Romney are neck and neck in a general election match-up, 47 to 48 percent, the poll found. Meanwhile, the president leads Newt Gingrich by 14-percentage points, 54 to 40 percent; Ron Paul by 7-percentage points, 50 to 43 percent; and Rick Santorum also by 7-percentage points, 51 to 44 percent.

The list of the swing states include Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Michigan, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Wisconsin.

The swing state match-ups are generally similar to national preferences ? Obama and Romney are tied at 48 percent, whereas Obama leads Gingrich 53 to 41 percent and Santorum 51 to 43 percent. Paul does slightly better nationally than in the swing states against the president, with Obama leading slightly 49 to 46 percent.

Obama and Romney were closely matched in the previous two swing state polls. In the last survey taken in late November and early December, the president trailed the GOP candidate by 5-percentage points, 43 to 48 percent; in an October poll, the two were virtually tied, 46 to 47 percent.

The USA Today/Gallup poll was conducted Jan. 24-28 among 737 registered voters living in the 12 states listed above, and has a margin of error of plus or minus 5 percentage points.

OAKLAND, California (AP) ? Oakland police say they arrested a total of about 150 people Saturday as protesters spent a portion of the day trying to get into a vacant convention center, and later broke into City Hall and tried to occupy a YMCA.

Police spokesman Jeff Thomason says most of the arrests came around 8 p.m. local time. That's when police took about 100 protesters into custody as they marched through the city's downtown, with some entering a YMCA building.

About 20 demonstrators were arrested earlier in the afternoon, after police say they threw rocks, bottles and other objects at officers and tore down fencing.

Police say three officers were injured. Officers used tear gas and "flash" grenades on the protesters after they refused to leave.

Authorities were still tabulating the exact number of arrests late Saturday.

(AP) ? Dozens of police maintained a late-night guard around City Hall following daylong protests that resulted in 300 arrests. Occupy Oakland demonstrators broke into the historic building and burned a U.S. flag, as officers earlier fired tear gas to disperse people throwing rocks and tearing down fencing at a convention center.

Saturday's protests ? the most turbulent since Oakland police forcefully dismantled an Occupy encampment in November ? came just days after the group said it planned to use a vacant building as a social center and political hub and threatened to try to shut down the port, occupy the airport and take over City Hall.

An exasperated Mayor Jean Quan, who faced heavy criticism for the police action last fall, called on the Occupy movement to "stop using Oakland as its playground."

"People in the community and people in the Occupy movement have to stop making excuses for this behavior," Quan said.

Protesters clashed with police throughout the day, at times throwing rocks, bottles and other objects at officers. And police responded by deploying smoke, tear gas and bean bag rounds, City Administrator Deanna Santanta said.

Interim Police Chief Howard Jordan said about 300 arrests were made.

"These demonstrators stated their intention was to provoke officers and engage in illegal activity and that's exactly what has occurred today," Santana said.

The group assembled outside City Hall late Saturday morning and marched through the streets, disrupting traffic as they threatened to take over the vacant Henry Kaiser Convention Center.

The protesters walked to the vacant convention center, where some started tearing down perimeter fencing and "destroying construction equipment" shortly before 3 p.m., police said.

Police said they issued a dispersal order and used smoke and tear gas after some protesters pelted them with bottles, rocks, burning flares and other objects.

The number of demonstrators swelled as the day wore on, with afternoon estimates ranging from about 1,000 to 2,000 people.

A majority of the arrests came after police took scores of protesters into custody as they marched through the city's downtown, with some entering a YMCA building, said Sgt. Jeff Thomason, a police spokesman.

Quan said that at one point, many protesters forced their way into City Hall, where they burned flags, broke an electrical box and damaged several art structures, including a recycled art exhibit created by children.

She blamed the destruction on a small "very radical, violent" splinter group within Occupy Oakland.

"This is not a situation where we had a 1,000 peaceful people and a few violent people. If you look at what's happening today in terms of destructing property, throwing at and charging the police, it's almost like they are begging for attention and hoping that the police will make an error."

Dozens of officers surrounded City Hall, while others swept the inside of the building looking for protesters who had broken into the building, then ran out of the building with American flags before officers arrived.

The protest group issued an email criticizing police, saying "Occupy Oakland's building occupation, an act of constitutionally protected civil disobedience was disrupted by a brutal police response today."

Michael Davis, 32, who is originally from Ohio and was in the Occupy movement in Cincinnati, said Saturday was a very hectic day that originally started off calm but escalated when police began using "flash bangs, tear gas, smoke grenades and bean bags."

"What could've been handled differently is the way the Oakland police came at us," Davis said. "We were peaceful."

City leaders joined Quan in criticizing the protesters.

"City Hall is closed for the weekend. There is no excuse for behavior we've witnessed this evening," City Council President Larry Reid said during a news briefing Saturday.

Oakland Councilman Ignacio De La Fuente, echoed Reid's sentiments and said that what was going on amounts to "domestic terrorism."

The national Occupy Wall Street movement, which denounces corporate excess and economic inequality, began in New York City in the fall but has been largely dormant lately.

Oakland, New York and Los Angeles were among the cities with the largest and most vocal Occupy protests early on. The demonstrations ebbed after those cities used force to move out hundreds of demonstrators who had set up tent cities.

In Oakland, the police department received heavy criticism for using force to break up earlier protests. Quan was among the critics, but on Saturday, she seemed to have changed her tune.

"Our officers have been very measured," Quan said. "Were there some mistakes made? There may be. I would say the Oakland police and our allies, so far a small percentage of mistakes. "But quite frankly, a majority of protesters who were charging the police were clearly not being peaceful.

Earlier this month, a court-appointed monitor submitted a report to a federal judge that included "serious concerns" about the department's handling of the Occupy protests.

Jordan said late Saturday that he was in "close contact" with the federal monitor during the protests.

Quan added, "If the demonstrators think that because we are working more closely with the monitor now that we won't do what we have to do to uphold the law and try keep people safe in this city, they're wrong."

Pork chops with chickpeas and spinach

Chickpeas and spinach bring big health benefits to this hearty one-pan meal. Cumin, chili powder, garlic and onion bring big flavor.

This meal wasn?t going to be a post. It was just meant to be dinner. But suddenly, the kitchen was smelling heavenly (assuming there?s cumin in heaven, and I certainly hope so). And when I served the chops and spooned the chickpea spinach mixture next to them, the plates looked really inviting. So before cutting into my chop, I had Marion taste hers. She smiled and nodded, and here we are.

This particular dish came together because we?ve been eating too much chicken. We love chicken, but even for us, there?s been a lot of it. So when I saw a nice looking pair of pork chops in the grocery store, I grabbed them. My first thought for sides were mashed potatoes and a salad, quick and easy. But we?ve been doing those a lot lately too.?

So I asked myself what we hadn?t been doing lately. Chickpeas immediately came to mind. These delicious, nutty-tasting beans are packed with proteins and other nutrients. No wonder they?ve spread from their Middle Eastern beginnings to tables all over the world.

I love cooking like this, by the way, making up the dish as I shop. After picking up a can of chickpeas, I headed back to the produce department for some spinach, another nutrient powerhouse. Onion and garlic would round out the produce for this meal. For the spices, I would go with salt, pepper, lots of cumin, a little chili powder and, to heat things up on a winter night, some cayenne pepper. Heading for the checkout, I could already smell and taste everything coming together.

Pork Chops with Chickpeas, Spinach and Cumin
?Serves 2 (can easily be doubled)

2 bone-in pork chops, about 1-inch thick and 8 ounces each
?1-1/2 teaspoons ground cumin
?1/2 teaspoon chili powder
?1/4? teaspoon cayenne pepper
?olive oil
?4 to 5 cups loosely packed baby spinach (about 3 ounces)
?salt and freshly ground black pepper
?1 medium yellow onion, sliced
?2 cloves garlic, minced
?1 15-1/2-ounce can chickpeas, drained and rinsed
?1/2 cup reduced sodium chicken broth (or water)

About 1/2 hour before cooking, let chops come to room temperature on a plate on the kitchen counter. (Don?t leave them in their package, especially if they?re on a Styrofoam tray ? its insulating properties will keep them too chilled.)

Mix the cumin, chili powder and cayenne pepper in a small bowl. Set aside. Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a large, lidded skillet over medium flame. When the oil is shimmering, add the spinach in handfuls, tossing to coat with oil. When all the spinach is incorporated, remove the pan from heat and cover. Let stand for 3 to 5 minutes; the spinach will wilt and condense greatly in volume.

Meanwhile, pat chops dry with paper towel and season on both sides with salt, pepper and half of the cumin mixture. Gently press the seasonings into the chops. Transfer the wilted spinach to a bowl with a slotted spoon and set aside. Wipe the pan clean with paper towels and heat 2 more tablespoons of oil over medium flame. Saut? chops for 5 minutes on one side, tilting the pan occasionally to make sure they stay in contact with oil and don?t scorch. Turn chops and cook for another 4 minutes. Transfer to a plate.

Add onion to pan, drizzling in more oil, if needed. Cook for about 4 minutes, stirring frequently to avoid burning or browning too much; reduce heat slightly, if necessary. When onions are just softening and turning translucent, add garlic to pan and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 45 seconds. Add chickpeas to pan, sprinkle with remaining cumin mixture and stir to combine. Add chicken broth or water to pan. Nestle chops among chickpeas, adding any accumulated juices, cover pan and reduce heat to low. Cook until chops are just cooked through, 5 to 7 minutes. An instant read thermometer should read 145 degrees F when inserted in the thickest part of the chop (avoid touching bone with the thermometer).

Transfer chops to a plate and tent with foil. Add spinach to skillet and toss to combine. Cook until spinach is just heated through, 1 to 2 minutes. Adjust seasonings. Plate chops and spoon chickpea spinach mixture alongside. Serve.

Greg Schiano came to Rutgers when the football program was in a state of disarray ? then left it in a bind.

Less than a week before Rutgers was expected to lock up a highly touted recruiting class, Schiano accepted an offer to become coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday.

There is, however, no doubt that Schiano leaves Rutgers football in better shape than he found it when he was hired to coach the Scarlet Knights in 2000. The New Jersey native had six winning seasons in the last seven years and guided the Knights to a 5-1 record in bowl games. Rutgers had been to one bowl in its history before Schiano arrived.

The Scarlet Knights are coming off a 9-4 season and have most of their key players back next year to make a run at a Big East title.

"This program is not a rebuild," athletic director Tim Pernetti said at a news conference on campus in Piscataway, N.J. "This program is priced to move in every way."

Pernetti, a former Rutgers football player who was coached by Schiano in high school, said he was not blindsided by his friend's decision. He'd known of Tampa Bay's interest in Schiano for about a week, but it picked up earlier this week. Pernetti said he was in constant communication with Schiano throughout the process.

Schiano met Thursday with the team, including paralyzed former player Eric LeGrand, and said goodbye.

"He's got to do what's best for his family," said LeGrand, who injured his spinal cord while making a tackle during a game in 2010. "Who could argue with him?"

Still, it's an awkward time to be looking for a coach.

Wednesday is national signing day, the first day high school recruits can sign a national letter of intent with a school. Rutgers was in position to sign a recruiting class rated by analysts as its best under Schiano.

Pernetti said he will reach out to recruits to assure them Rutgers is still the place to be.

"The message is this is the same program it was two days ago," he said.

He added that he could not guarantee hiring a permanent coach by signing day, but did say it is "doable."

"Any AD worth what they're paying him has a list (of coaching candidates) in his pocket," he said.

Assistant head coach and offensive line coach Kyle Flood was promoted to interim coach, though offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti would seem to be the most likely candidate if Pernetti hires from within.

Speculation about possible candidates from outside almost immediately started with Florida International coach Mario Cristobal, who, like Schiano, is a former University of Miami assistant.

For now it's up to Pernetti, Flood and the assistants left behind to hold together the recruiting class.

"It's just a bad situation because of the timing," Rivals.com national recruiting analyst Mike Farrell said.

According to Rivals.com, Rutgers had 17 non-binding verbal commitments before Schiano's departure and at least two more blue-chip prospects from New Jersey ? defensive lineman Darius Hamilton from Don Bosco Prep in Ramsey and receiver Devin Fuller of Old Tappan High School ? were strongly considering going to Rutgers.

Farrell said most of Rutgers' top committed players had told him that they were contacted by other programs not long after news broke about Schiano. Many of the recruits were lining up last-minute official visits to other schools, he said.

The fact that a coach could jump from Rutgers to the NFL is a testament to the turnaround Schiano orchestrated. Pernetti even said that Schiano took over the "worst program" in the country.

The three previous coaches went 67-114-5 from 1984-2000, graduation rates were low and the facilities were hardly at the Division I-A level.

Rutgers won three games in Schiano's first two seasons and 12 in his first four. The Scarlet Knights went 7-5 in 2005, setting the stage for a startling breakthrough. Rutgers finished 11-2 in 2006, ranked 12th in the nation.

Miami in 2006 and Michigan in 2007 tried to hire Schiano away, but he turned down those offers and moved into a newly built house ? that the university paid for ? about a mile from the football stadium.

"I've had several opportunities over the years and none of them felt right," Schiano told The Star-Ledger of Newark, N.J., as he left Rutgers' football facility Thursday night. "This time, this one felt right."

The Scarlet Knights haven't gotten back to that '06 level, but they also haven't returned to the dark days. Rutgers slipped to 4-8 in 2010, then bounced back to go 9-4 this past season with a victory against Iowa State in the Pinstripe Bowl.

The remarkable rebuild did come with a price, though ? and not just the $2.35 million annual salary Schiano's latest deal was to pay him through 2016.

Rutgers expanded and renovated its stadium at a cost of $102 million. The school had hoped to raise the money through private donors, but fell short. Rutgers scaled back plans for the expansion and issued bonds and borrowed money to complete the project.

That combined with the fact that the school had to cut six varsity sports in 2006 ? including men's tennis and crew ? led many in the state to question whether the school had overcommitted to football.

But there were also plenty of fans thrilled with the results on the field, and it looked as if Schiano was setting up the Scarlet Knights to contend for Big East's titles for the next several seasons.

"This thing that has been built is bigger than any one individual," Pernetti said.

Divorce and Pets | More People Choose Animals Over Money ...

Prime-Parents-Club-Divorce-PetsParents of people children know that they have a 50% chance of needing a ?What happens if we split? plan. They may not discuss it, they may not let themselves think about it, but I bet you, in the back of every parent?s mind is the ?What happens if?.? thought.

Personally, I don?t think that it?s all that crazy. Again, the divorce rate is roughly 40-50% in our country. I have friends who state, prior to marriage, that their future spouse is ?The one or the first one.? If you ignore marital status and just look at long-term committed relationships, chances are you still have roughly the same potential split rate. There?s just no getting around it anymore, any relationship has a roughly 50% chance of ending.?

Pet parents also may not discuss or let themselves think about ?What if?? but I promise you, it?s there. According to a survey of 1,500 pet owners by PetMD, ?90% of pet owners would fight more passionately for their pets than for money in a divorce.? Even more telling is this information released by?Michigan State University College of Law:??Because pets are becoming such a big part of our lives, some courts ? ?are willing to treat pets more like children? Courts have considered the best interest of the pets in determining who gets custody of them. They have also awarded shared custody, visitation, and alimony payments to the owners.?

What about you?? As pet owner (or pet parent, if you prefer), a people parent, or both, what do you think about having a ?What if?? plan?? Do you have one?? Have you and your spouse or significant other discussed ?What if??

(AP Photo/Apichart Weerawong, File)

(AP) ? A new taste for eating elephant meat ? everything from trunks to sex organs ? has emerged in Thailand and could pose a new threat to the survival of the species.

Wildlife officials told The Associated Press that they were alerted to the practice after finding two elephants slaughtered last month in a national park in western Thailand.

"The poachers took away the elephants' sex organs and trunks ... for human consumption," Damrong Phidet, director-general of Thailand's wildlife agency, said in a telephone interview. Some meat was to be consumed without cooking, like "elephant sashimi," he said.

Poachers typically just remove tusks, which are most commonly found on Asian male elephants and fetch thousands of dollars on the black market. A market for elephant meat, however, could lead to killing of the wider elephant population, Damrong said.

"If you keep hunting elephants for this, then they'll become extinct," he said.

Consuming elephant meat is not common in Thailand, but some Asian cultures believe consuming animals' reproductive organs can boost sexual prowess.

Damrong said the elephant meat was ordered by restaurants in Phuket, a popular travel destination in the country's south. It wasn't clear if the diners were foreigners.

The accusation drew a quick rebuttal from Phuket Governor Tri Akradecha, who told Thai media that he had never heard of such restaurants but ordered officials to look into the matter.

Poaching elephants is banned, and trafficking or possessing poached animal parts also is illegal. Elephant tusks are sought in the illegal ivory trade, and baby wild elephants are sometimes poached to be trained for talent shows.

"The situation has come to a crisis point. The longer we allow these cruel acts to happen, the sooner they will become extinct," Damrong said.

The quest for ivory remains the top reason poachers kill elephants in Thailand, other environmentalists say.

Soraida Salwala, the founder of Friends of the Asian Elephant foundation, said a full grown pair of tusks could be sold from 1 million to 2 million baht ($31,600 to $63,300), while the estimated value of an elephant's penis is more than 30,000 baht ($950).

"There's only a handful of people who like to eat elephant meat, but once there's demand, poachers will find it hard to resist the big money," she cautioned.

Thailand has fewer than 3,000 wild elephants and about 4,000 domesticated elephants, according to the National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation Department.

The pachyderms were a mainstay of the logging industry in the northern and western parts of the country until logging contracts were revoked in the late 1980s.

Domesticated animals today are used mainly for heavy lifting and entertainment.

Tim Gunn: Celibate for 29 Years!

Make it work, Tim Gunn often tells contestants on Project Runway.

But the fashion guru made a startling confession yesterday during a segment on ABC's The Revolution: he has not "made it work" with a sexual partner in nearly three decades!

Tim Gunn Pic

Admitting that he has not had intercourse in "29 years," the openly gay designer was especially emotional and honest during the show.

"I'm a perfectly fulfilled person," he said of his decision to remain celibate. "But it's very physiological."

Gunn held back tears at multiple points and spoke of his ex-partner, someone who he described as "impatient with my sexual performance," which prompted the 58-year old to go the abstinence route.

But Gunn also went out of his way to emphasize that sex is not everything. Far from it, in fact, stating simply:

"I'm happy to be healthy and alive, frankly."

Grafted watermelon plants take in more pesticides

ScienceDaily (Jan. 25, 2012) ? The widely used farm practice of grafting watermelon and other melon plants onto squash or pumpkin rootstocks results in larger amounts of certain pesticides in the melon fruit, scientists are reporting in a new study. Although only low amounts of pesticides appeared in the fruit in the study, the scientists advise that commercial farmers use "caution" when grafting watermelon plants to squash in a report that appears in ACS' Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

Mehmet Isleyen and colleagues explain that farmers graft watermelon and other fruits onto the roots of gourd plants because it makes the fruit more resistant to diseases. In Turkey, where the group did the study, more than 95 percent of watermelons grow from grafted seedlings. Although the gourds are hardier, previous research has shown they accumulate pesticides called organochlorines. Organochlorines have been widely banned because of concerns about their effects on human health and wildlife. Despite the fact that their remnants can linger in the soil for decades, some organochlorines remain in use. While traditional watermelon plants do not take up these compounds, the researchers wanted to resolve uncertainty about watermelon grown on the roots of plants in the squash family.

The group grew common Turkish watermelon-squash graft seedlings in soil taken from a farming region there. They tested the roots, stems, leaves and fruit of the plants and found that organochlorine levels were as much as 140 times higher in the stems of squash-grafted watermelons than in intact watermelons. However, while still urging caution, the group notes that these levels are 6-12 times lower than accepted limits of the pesticides in produce in the U.S. and Turkey.

London's Big Ben is leaning, parliament sinking: reports (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? The landmark clock tower containing Big Ben at Britain's Palace of Westminster, is tilting, while media reports Monday said the mother of all parliaments was slipping into the River Thames, raising fears over its future.

The House of Commons commission, which is responsible for the upkeep of the 19th century neo-Gothic parliamentary estate popular with tourist photographs, was due to meet Monday.

Media reports said it would discuss a surveyor's report which could recommend lawmakers move out for repairs costing up to one billion pounds, while the Daily Telegraph said another proposal might be to sell to Russian or Chinese developers for about 500 million pounds (?779.7 million).

But a commission spokesman said there was no surveyor's report, and members were only meeting to discuss setting up a group to look at general long-term renovation of the grade 1-listed building designed by Charles Barry and Augustus Welby Pugin.

"I think there's been twos and twos added together and come up with we are selling to the Russians, but they won't be talking about anything like that," the spokesman said.

The 96-metre tall clock tower, which houses the bell originally nicknamed Big Ben, leans about 46 cm to the left of its peak.

A construction expert who worked on the leaning tower of Pisa in Italy and a multi-storey carpark under the houses of parliament in central London, said there was nothing to worry about, and it would take 10,000 years to reach an angle of concern.

Professor John Burland of Imperial College London also said work on the underground Jubilee train line in the 1990s had not caused dramatic movement, while a spokesman for the commission said the tilt could have existed since its construction in 1859.

The lean which is just visible to the naked eye had "been there for years," Burland said.

"When I first started work on the car park it was obvious that it was leaning," he told BBC radio.

"It was probably developed at a very early stage because there's no cracking in the cladding and we think it probably leant while they were building it and before they put the cladding on.

"That was a long time ago and buildings do lean a little bit."

He also dismissed concern in the media that parliament was slipping into the Thames, while the commission's spokesman denied the walls around the palace were suffering from a particularly bad subsidence problem causing Big Ben to lean.

The current building, which houses the upper and lower chambers as well as the offices of some lawmakers, was built after its medieval predecessor was largely destroyed by fire in 1834 and has required constant maintenance.

"There's no such thing as an old building that isn't cracked," he said.

"In fact they're beneficial because the building moves thermally more than is caused by the Jubilee Line and the movements concentrated around the cracks and, if they didn't, there'd be cracking elsewhere.

"So these have been there for years and they're certainly not caused by the Jubilee Line or the car park."

Many institutions offer financial aids. In the Internet is where you may be able to see the details regarding this in the colleges? communication course. If a student is majoring in something specific and wants financial assistance, then a private grant can be chosen.

With the Electric Document System Foundation or EDSF, financial assistance is given to those communications students. This financial assistance is a full funding of the student?s education it is granted to 30 students every year. Other famous scholarships are the Betty Endicott/NTA-NCCB Student Scholarship and the James Lawrence Fly Scholarship that is given to pupils in the communications program.

The department of communications of each college or institutions normally guarantees some bit of financial aid to those majoring in communications. At this time, there are schools that give financial help to their students. Well known universities that guarantee scholarships are the University of Texas at San Antonio and the University of Miami.

In terms of communications degree, not all will be able to achieve it. What happens is that they would just pursue a related degree. Try to apply to many scholarships, especially those aimed at a communications course.

US beats Venezuela 1-0 on Clark's late goal

Jermaine Jones, Jose Velasquez

By BOB BAUM

updated 12:49 a.m. ET Jan. 22, 2012

GLENDALE, Ariz. - Ricardo Clark had barely played in the last six months. His last appearance for his German second-division team came in July, and this was his first game for the U.S. national squad since August.

Finally given a chance, he provided the goal that had eluded his team all night.

Clark headed Jermaine Jones' corner kick into the net in the 7th minute of stoppage time and the United States beat Venezuela 1-0 in a friendly on Saturday night.

U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann inserted Clark into the game in the 86th minute.

"Ricardo came in and you could see that he was struggling because he hasn't played for many months," Klinsmann said. "He was trying hard to catch up with the group and still not there because of that long stretch. But once on the field he is a player that is technically very gifted."

The U.S. had dominated play with nothing to show for it before Clark beat goalkeeper Jose Morales from 7 yards away for his third international goal and first since September 2009.

Venezuela was livid at the finish, upset with a series of calls and non-calls by officials that led to a series of events concluding with the winning goal.

Moments after Clark scored, Venezuela's Jose Velasquez was ejected with a red card. Venezuela drew four yellow cards to one for the United States.

"For us, it was sad to give up a goal in the 98th minute," Venezuela coach Cesar Farias said. "For us, this result leaves a sour taste and the way we lost, but the experience is important."

The first match between the countries in five years featured the "B" teams of both nations because the top players are with their professional squads.

An exception was Jones, who is playing with the national team while serving an eight-game suspension by the German soccer federation.

"It was a great cross," Clark said of the corner kick that led to the goal. "I found a good spot and made the most of it."

It was Clark's first game since the United States played Mexico on Aug. 10. He last scored in international competition against Trinidad and Tobago on Sept. 9, 2009.

The 28-year-old midfielder from Jonesboro, Ga., is ignominiously remembered for a play in the 2010 World Cup, when Ghana's Kevin-Prince Boateng stripped the ball from him and put the Black Stars ahead in the fifth minute. Ghana went on to eliminate the Americans 2-1 in overtime.

Jones, who served as U.S. captain for the game, was suspended when the German federation concluded he had intentionally stepped on the foot of star player Marco Reus during a break in the action of a German Cup game between Jones' team Schalke and Borussia Moenchengladbach.

The U.S. outshot Venezuela 15-6, many of the opportunities from short range, but the shots were errant, or Morales made one of his five saves.

Even though it was a struggle, Klinsmann liked what he saw from his young players.

"We had 10, 12 chances and they had no chances, we controlled completely and that gives them confidence," he said. "We wanted to give them a feeling of this type of game that they can play with these nations."

Morales was shaken up after he took a knee to the left thigh from American C.J. Sapong. The goalkeeper sat on the ground for several minutes until the decision was made to leave him in the game, an incident that led to the extended stopping time that featured the winning goal.

The United States beat a team from South America for the first time since a 3-1 win over Ecuador on March 25, 2007. The U.S. had 10 losses and three ties against teams from that continent since then.

The U.S .improved to 3-4-1 since former German World Cup star Klinsmann took over from Bob Bradley as coach last year.

Jones had one of the best chances for a goal but missed from point-blank range. The U.S. had also failed miserably on set plays until the game winner.

Venezuela had a scoring shot in the 62nd minute but Carlos Salazar's header went right into the hands of goalkeeper Bill Hamid. Moments later, the U.S. squad missed another chance when Teal Bunbury's shot off a breakaway was just right of the post.

Venezuela and the United States played for the fourth time. The U.S. leads the series 2-0-1.

Clark's goal was only the sixth for the U.S. teams in Klinsmann's eight games as coach.

Clark, a former player with Major League Soccer's Houston Dynamo, is with Eintracht Frankfurt but has fallen out of favor and hasn't been in a match for the team since July 25, the second game of the season.

The United States plays Panama in Panama City on Wednesday.

Hamid made his U.S. national team debut along with defender A.J. DeLaGarza, midfielder Graham Zusi and substitute Sapong.

Lobbying outlays bounce back (Politico)

Lobbying spending by the nation?s most prominent political influencers largely rebounded during last year?s fourth quarter, in part reflecting aggressive special interest campaigns concerning health, trade, employment, energy, telecom and technology issues, a POLITICO analysis of new federal disclosures indicates.

Companies and organizations such as Google, Verizon, BP, Royal Dutch Shell, Southern Co., Business Roundtable, National Association of Realtors, Comcast, Time Warner Cable and CTIA-The Wireless Association all posted larger lobbying numbers than they did during both the preceding quarter and the same period one year before.

South Carolina Primary Live Coverage

Upstart influence operations run by companies such as Facebook, meanwhile, also reported markedly increased federal lobbying investments.

In all, 17 of the nation?s top 50 biggest-spending lobbying entities, as calculated by the Center for Responsive Politics based on third-quarter federal lobbying spending, exceeded their fourth-quarter 2010 and third-quarter 2011 output. Another 24 entities saw their spending in last year?s fourth quarter jump compared with one of the two periods.

And more than three-fifths of these top 50 entities spent more for all of 2011 than they did in 2010, according to POLITICO?s analysis.

Following the pitched battles in 2009 and 2010 over health care and financial reform, as well as energy and climate change legislation, overall federal lobbying activity stalled during much of 2011.

But the ill-fated congressional supercommittee, coupled with several high-profile legislative fights late last year, helped change matters.

Overall, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce spent more on lobbying during the fourth quarter ? $14.25 million ? than any other, according to fourth quarter disclosure reports, which lobbying entities had to submit by Friday night.

The Chamber, while well off its mark from the nearly $51 million it spent during the fourth quarter of 2010, spent about as much in the fourth quarter of 2011 as it did in the quarter before. It voluntarily includes state-level and grassroots lobbying efforts in its reports.

?Our lobbying figures represent an aggressive effort to advance our jobs agenda, which we rolled out around Labor Day. This includes our support for the three free trade agreements, which passed during the fall,? Chamber spokesman J.P. Fielder said. ?With the economy still facing strong headwinds, we?re continuing to aggressively push our pro-growth agenda this year. This encompasses a myriad of issues, from expanding energy production in order to drive down costs and create jobs, to supporting legislation that shuts down rogue websites and protects jobs.?

The Business Roundtable, which represents the chief executives of top U.S. companies, spent nearly $3.9 million during the fourth quarter ? about 27 percent more than in the third quarter and nearly 75 percent more compared with the fourth quarter of 2010.

?Our overall effort was to support policies that promote economic growth and job creation including the three trade agreements ? Colombia, Panama, South Korea ? work on fundamental corporate tax reform, extension of the research and development tax credit, work on various regulations ? and cyber security legislation,? said Larry Burton, the Business Roundtable?s executive director.

2 men sentenced for attack at Boswell's farm (AP)

DES MOINES, Iowa ? Two men who pleaded guilty to breaking into U.S. Rep. Leonard Boswell's southern Iowa farmhouse armed with a BB gun last summer have been sentenced to prison.

The judge in Decatur County sentenced David Dewberry, of Fremont, Neb., to 25 years in prison for first-degree robbery. Cody Rollins, of Lamoni, was sentenced to 10 years for aiding and abetting an attempted burglary.

Dewberry entered Boswell's farmhouse near Leon July 19 armed with a BB gun. As the 78-year-old Boswell scuffled with him, his adult grandson pointed a shotgun at Dewberry, chasing him off. Prosecutors say Rollins helped plan the burglary and drove Dewberry to Boswell's house.

In a statement read in court, Boswell called the attack "sinister ... and ... appalling" and said Dewberry was lucky he wasn't killed.

More pressing, though (no pun intended), is his unfortunate task of telling the roommates. They are all various riffs on sad, shocked and completely disastrous. Angelina Jolie: PREGNANT (Tabloid "Officially" Claims)!!

Angelina Jolie is OFFICIALLY pregnant, according to a non-reliable celebrity news source. You heard it there first, and in 99.9% likelihood, incorrectly!

This is the second tabloid to make Angelina Jolie pregnant in a month. It's her own fault, making comments that she might be expanding her brood.

Maybe. Eventually. They don't rule it out. That's it. She also likes getting in bed with Brad, so basically, she's gotta be knocked up. We're convinced.

Ange did say recently, "I could end up pregnant." Could. She also said "I love being pregnant!" In general. Not right now. Yet OK! still cranks out this:

Angelina Jolie Pregnancy Story

Oh, but lest we thought OK! were just joshing us, a "source close to the Oscar-winner" reveals that Angelina is having her seventh child and NOT adopting it!

In other words, she's (totally not) pregnant, this (not) reliable source says!

"She's almost three months along," the faux Deep Throat dished. "It's not something she wants to officially announce but she's telling a select group of people."

SIDE NOTE: None of whom are actual humans.

"Angelina is really savoring every moment. She loves being pregnant. She's been having a tough time with morning sickness but says it's all worth it."

That's good at least. Wouldn't want a fake pregnancy to feel not worthwhile.

ESO's VISTA telescope, at the Paranal Observatory in Chile, has captured a striking new image of the Helix Nebula. This picture, taken in infrared light, reveals strands of cold nebular gas that are invisible in images taken in visible light, as well as bringing to light a rich background of stars and galaxies.

The Helix Nebula is one of the closest and most remarkable examples of a planetary nebula [1]. It lies in the constellation of Aquarius (The Water Bearer), about 700 light-years away from Earth. This strange object formed when a star like the Sun was in the final stages of its life. Unable to hold onto its outer layers, the star slowly shed shells of gas that became the nebula. It is evolving to become a white dwarf star and appears as the tiny blue dot seen at the centre of the image.

The nebula itself is a complex object composed of dust, ionised material as well as molecular gas, arrayed in a beautiful and intricate flower-like pattern and glowing in the fierce glare of ultraviolet light from the central hot star.

The main ring of the Helix is about two light-years across, roughly half the distance between the Sun and the nearest star. However, material from the nebula spreads out from the star to at least four light-years. This is particularly clear in this infrared view since red molecular gas can be seen across much of the image.

While hard to see visually, the glow from the thinly spread gas is easily captured by VISTA's special detectors, which are very sensitive to infrared light. The 4.1-metre telescope is also able to detect an impressive array of background stars and galaxies.

The powerful vision of ESO's VISTA telescope also reveals fine structure in the nebula's rings. The infrared light picks out how the cooler, molecular gas is organised. The material clumps into filaments that radiate out from the centre and the whole view resembles a celestial firework display.

Even though they look tiny, these strands of molecular hydrogen, known as cometary knots, are about the size of our Solar System. The molecules in them are able to survive the high-energy radiation that emanates from the dying star precisely because they clump into these knots, which in turn are shielded by dust and molecular gas. It is currently unclear how the cometary knots may have originated.

Notes

[1] Planetary nebulae have nothing to do with planets. This confusing name arose because many of them show small bright discs when observed visually and resemble the outer planets in the Solar System, such as Uranus and Neptune. The Helix Nebula, which also bears the catalogue number NGC 7293, is unusual as it appears very large, but also very faint, when viewed through a small telescope.

The year 2012 marks the 50th anniversary of the founding of the European Southern Observatory (ESO). ESO is the foremost intergovernmental astronomy organisation in Europe and the world's most productive astronomical observatory. It is supported by 15 countries: Austria, Belgium, Brazil, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Finland, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. ESO carries out an ambitious programme focused on the design, construction and operation of powerful ground-based observing facilities enabling astronomers to make important scientific discoveries. ESO also plays a leading role in promoting and organising cooperation in astronomical research. ESO operates three unique world-class observing sites in Chile: La Silla, Paranal and Chajnantor. At Paranal, ESO operates the Very Large Telescope, the world's most advanced visible-light astronomical observatory and two survey telescopes. VISTA works in the infrared and is the world's largest survey telescope and the VLT Survey Telescope is the largest telescope designed to exclusively survey the skies in visible light. ESO is the European partner of a revolutionary astronomical telescope ALMA, the largest astronomical project in existence. ESO is currently planning a 40-metre-class European Extremely Large optical/near-infrared Telescope, the E-ELT, which will become "the world's biggest eye on the sky".
