Parents of tragic Ormskirk skin cancer victim Rhiannon Bill, 25, issue ...

THE parents of a ?model student? who lost a 10-year battle with skin cancer are urging others not to put their lives at risk for a suntan.

Rhiannon Bill tragically passed away a day after her 25th birthday following a brave decade-long battle with malignant melanoma.

And while her parents are still unsure why their daughter ? who was not a sun-worshipper and didn?t use sunbeds ? was stuck by the aggressive cancer, they are sending out a warning to others of the risks of sun exposure.

Rhiannon?s dad Des, a deacon at St Anne?s RC Church, said: ?We?re not 100% certain how she got this, but it?s a real killer. People don?t realise it?s not just your skin, melanoma can affect other organs. If reading this makes one person think twice and put on cream before they or their children go into the sun then her story will have made a difference.?

The former St Anne?s and St Bede?s pupil first noticed something was wrong at the age of 15 in June 2002.

Mum Joan said: ?It began with the most insignificant thing ? something on her scalp that kept catching when she brushed her hair. We went to the GP and they removed it and sent it for tests. We couldn?t believe it when it came back as melanoma.?

Rhiannon underwent surgery to remove an area of her scalp and had a skin graft from her leg to cover it. With the support of her school she took her GCSEs the following summer and went on to St John Rigby Sixth Form College.

After a gap year working at Edge Hill University, she started an English Language degree at Bangor University, becoming involved with the volunteering service working with underprivileged youngsters in the area.

Coming home after her first year, the family were overjoyed when she was given the five-year all-clear by doctors in June 2007. But only a month later, she discovered a lump in her neck. The melanoma had returned, and doctors delivered the chilling news she had three malignant tumours in her lymph nodes.

Radical neck dissection surgery left Rhiannon with a 12-inch scar from her ear to her collar bone to her chin. But she was determined to prove doctors wrong who told her to forget about university.

Joan said: ?It really upset her. She was able to go back a year later and graduated with a 2:1 in 2010 and was so pleased.?

By this time Rhiannon ? a ?true Blue? Evertonian who shared a season ticket with sister Helen ? had found love with boyfriend Joe and returned to Bangor to start a two year part-time masters degree in Linguistics in September that year. But the following summer, she started having headaches and being sick.

Joan said: ?They found a tumour the size of a golf ball in her brain. She had surgery in October last year but afterwards wasn?t recovering from radiotherapy. Then in March we found it had returned in her brain and also spread to her liver, it was devastating.?

The family was told about a drug that might have given her another 12 months, but tragically by the time results of tests to see if it would be effective came back positive, she was in Queenscourt Hospice and too ill for treatment.

Des said: ?We were told we had months but in the end it was only weeks. She had been planning a big party for her 25th birthday but she went downhill so fast.?

Rhiannon was brought home on April 19, where her loved ones sang happy birthday and celebrated with balloons and a cake. The following morning she died at home as she had wanted. At her funeral on April 27, more than 450 people packed into St Anne?s Church.

The family has received more than 500 letters and cards, and the School of Linguistics at Bangor University has now created the Rhiannon Bill prize for best final year undergraduate dissertation in her name.

More than ?8,500 has been raised in her name, including ?4,000 donated online for Cancer Research UK and Queenscourt Hospice, and Joan said: ?She would be gobsmacked by the donations that have come in. We want to thank all those who have prayed for her and support us, the doctors, nurses and other medical staff who cared for her. We have met some fantastic people and at least we had a chance to say all the things we wanted to say to her.?

Her proud dad said: ?People have described Rhiannon as inspirational, fun, wise and loving. Her illness gave her a different outlook on life and she had an ability to make people feel better about things. She battled through adversity and flourished ? she really did enjoy life and Joe was a real rock who was always at her side. Bishop Tom Williams said to me she will always be a golden thread running through our lives and that really sums it up. She had a real twinkle in her eye and the world is a poorer place without her.?

Prince Charles applauds Federer's win at Wimbledon

WIMBLEDON, England (AP) ? Roger Federer gave Prince Charles a bow, then gave Fabio Fognini a royal thumping.

With the Prince of Wales visiting Wimbledon for the first time since 1970, Federer was at his best Wednesday and beat Fognini 6-1, 6-3, 6-2.

Six-time champion Federer won 37 of 41 points on his first serve, and won 21 of 23 points at the net against Fognini, an Italian ranked 68th.

Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall sat in the first row of the Royal Box as Federer walked onto Centre Court for the day's first match. Federer and Fognini stood side by side as they bowed awkwardly toward the royals, and Charles responded with a wave and grin.

"They do brief you beforehand," Federer said. "I guess you don't do anything stupid. You behave. Obviously we were asked to bow, which is obviously no problem to do. We're thrilled for the tennis family that they came to watch Wimbledon today."

When Federer completed his victory, Charles and Camilla joined the crowd's applause.

Seeded third, Federer hopes to end his 2?-year drought in major tournaments, and he's off to a good start, losing only nine games through two rounds. He seeks to add to his record total of 16 Grand Slam championships, and he could match the record of seven Wimbledon men's titles set by William Renshaw in the 1880s and tied by Pete Sampras in 2000.

"I'm just happy overall with how I'm playing," Federer said. "I'm serving well when I have to. I'm moving well. I feel like my forehand and backhand are working well. All of a sudden you win quite comfortably, but you have to focus until the very last point, and I'm happy as well with my concentration level."

Shortly after Federer's victory, rain interrupted play, and the retractable roof on Centre Court was closed for the first time in the tournament. More than 20 matches on outside courts were postponed until Thursday.

Sloane Stephens, a 19-year-old American playing at Wimbledon for the first time, saved five set points in the first set and beat No. 23 Petra Cetkovska 7-6 (6), 4-6, 6-3. In the final set, Stephens trailed love-30 in four consecutive service games, yet won them all.

"I'm 19 and I do still have some lapses," she said. "They're less now than I used to have in the past. I really don't get as upset when I lose points now. I'm not that emotional anymore."

Stephens is coming off her first run to the fourth round at a Grand Slam tournament, which happened this month at the French Open.

Heather Watson became the first British woman to reach the third round since 2002 when she defeated American Jamie Hampton 6-1, 6-4.

Sara Errani needed only seven seconds to complete a rain-interrupted win, and she didn't even have to hit a ball.

Errani led American CoCo Vandeweghe 6-1, 5-3 and held the advantage one point from victory when their match was halted Tuesday evening. They returned to Court 16 some 18 hours later, and when Vandeweghe double-faulted into the net on the first point, Errani had the win.

No. 21-seeded Milos Raonic required only one game to complete a rain-interrupted first-round win over Santiago Giraldo, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. No. 7 David Ferrer reached the second round by beating Dustin Brown 7-6 (5), 6-4, 6-4.

Reigning U.S. Open champion Samantha Stosur was upset by 72nd-ranked Arantxa Rus 6-2, 0-6, 6-4. Stosur, who was seeded fifth, fell to 6-10 at Wimbledon.

No. 13 Dominika Cibulkova lost to Klara Zakopalova 6-4, 6-1. Former No. 1 Ana Ivanovic beat Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

American Mardy Fish said he declined interviews after his first-round victory because of a stomach problem related to pain medication he's taking for his right arm ? and not related to his heart. He expects to be ready for his second-round match Thursday.

Fish spoke to reporters Wednesday, a day after he beat Ruben Ramirez-Hidalgo in straight sets. It was the first match for Fish since a medical procedure in May to try to pinpoint an accelerated heartbeat.

Federer took only 23 minutes to win the first set and continued to pull away. The inconsistent Fognini fell to 1-16 against top 10 players but did manage some spectacular shots, and the players shared smiles after several improbable points that had the crowd roaring.

There was a brief moment of drama when Federer slipped behind the baseline after hitting a forehand. His legs splayed and his left knee landed hard on the grass.

"I'm fine," he said. "No pain, which is good. It could be dangerous with the left knee. I'm happy it was only basically a bruise to the ground, and not anything in the knee itself."

Google's Chrome browser to be available on Apple's iPad, iPhone

SAN FRANCISCO | Thu Jun 28, 2012 7:32pm BST

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Chrome, Google Inc's Internet browser, will be made available on the iPhone and iPad, two hot devices manufactured by Google's fierce rival Apple Inc.

The development, announced on Thursday at Google's I/O developer conference in San Francisco, could further expand the reach of Chrome in the intensely fought browser wars. Launched in 2008, Google's browser overtook Microsoft's Internet Explorer in May as the world's most popular, according to analytics company StatCounter.

Google Senior Vice President Sundar Pichai confirmed Chrome's pole position during his remarks onstage, saying that Google data showed the browser now has 310 million "active" users. Chrome will begin appearing in Apple's App Store later on Thursday, Pichai said.

Apple in recent months has sought to lessen its dependency on Google's Web services within its products, heightening the competition between the two tech companies. Earlier this month, the phone and tablet manufacturer said it would load its own home-built mapping service in next version of mobile OS instead of Google Maps.

Earlier this week, Google announced its own tablet, the Nexus 7, which will ship with Chrome as its default browser.

(AP) ? The Indiana Pacers have parted ways with Larry Bird.

Owner Herb Simon announced the move Wednesday, one day before the NBA draft. He said Bird will stay on for the draft, when the Pacers are scheduled to pick No. 26 overall in the first round.

The 55-year-old Bird was the Pacers coach from 1997-2000, taking the team to its only NBA Finals appearance that final year, before returning to the front office in 2003. He took full control as president of basketball decisions after the 2007-08 season, when Donnie Walsh left to become the New York Knicks' president.

Walsh is returning as the Pacers' president. Kevin Pritchard, the director of player personnel, is being promoted to general manager, replacing David Morway, who resigned Tuesday.

Bird said health issues were among the reasons for his departure.

"I just think it's time," he said.

Bird had said just a month ago that he wanted to stay and expressed interest in a three-year deal rather than the annual "handshake" agreements he had with Simon. Bird recently was named the NBA Executive of the Year after building a tough, young team that lost to eventual champion Miami in six games in the playoffs.

The former Indiana State star won three MVP awards and three NBA titles during his Hall of Fame career with Boston.

(AP) ? The Supreme Court on Monday threw out mandatory life in prison without parole for juveniles. The ruling continued its trend of holding that children cannot be automatically punished the same way as criminal adults without considering their age and other factors.

The 5-4 decision split along ideological lines: The court's four liberals and swing vote Justice Anthony Kennedy joined to order states and the federal government to allow judges and juries to consider a juvenile's age when they hand down sentences for some of the harshest crimes, instead of making life in prison without parole automatic.

By making youth "irrelevant to imposition of that harshest prison sentence, such a scheme poses too great a risk of disproportionate punishment," wrote Justice Elena Kagan, who was joined in the majority opinion by Kennedy and Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stephen Breyer and Sonia Sotomayor.

Monday's decision left open the possibility that individual judges could sentence juveniles to life without parole in individual cases of murder, but said state and federal laws cannot automatically impose such a sentence.

This decision is in line with others the court has made, including ruling out the death penalty for juveniles and life without parole for young people whose crimes did not involve killing.

Dissenting, the court's four conservatives said nothing in the Constitution forbids laws requiring mandatory life in prison without parole for juveniles. Chief Justice John Roberts was joined in the main dissent by Justices Antonin Scalia, Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito. Alito also wrote separately and read his dissent aloud in the courtroom.

Under the majority opinion, Alito said, "Even a 17?-year-old who sets off a bomb in crowded mall or guns down a dozen students and teachers is a 'child' and must be given a chance to persuade a judge to permit his release into society. Nothing in the Constitution supports this arrogation of legislative authority."

Twenty-six states and the federal government have made life in prison without parole mandatory for some types of murder and allowed it to be applied to 14-year-olds, court papers said. In addition, Louisiana has some mandatory life without parole sentences for 15-year-olds, and Texas has some for 17-year-olds.

The decision came in the robbery and murder cases of Evan Miller and Kuntrell Jackson, who were 14 when they were convicted and sentenced to life without parole.

Jackson was sentenced in Arkansas after the shooting death of a store clerk during an attempted robbery in 1999. Another boy shot the clerk, but because Jackson was present he was convicted of capital murder and aggravated robbery.

Using his case, Breyer and Sotomayor said in a separate opinion they would have gone even further than just getting rid of laws requiring mandatory life in prison without parole for juveniles like Jackson. "There is no basis for imposing a sentence of life without parole upon a juvenile who did not himself kill or intend to kill," Breyer said in a separate opinion.

Miller was convicted in Alabama of capital murder during the course of arson. A neighbor, while doing drugs and drinking with Miller and a 16-year-old boy, attacked Miller. Intoxicated, Miller and his friend beat the 52-year-old man and set fire to his home, killing him.

Monday's high court ruling "is an important win for children," said Bryan Stevenson, executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative, who represented Jackson and Miller. "The court took a significant step forward by recognizing the fundamental unfairness of mandatory death-in-prison sentences that don't allow sentencers to consider the unique status of children and their potential for change. The court has recognized that children need additional attention and protection in the criminal justice system."

Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange expressed disappointment with the decision. "It is rare that a juvenile commits the worst kind of murder. But when this happens, the Alabama Legislature and most other American legislatures have determined that the appropriate sentence is life without parole. And they have made that sentence mandatory. Thus, it is hard to understand the Court's ruling that this sentencing procedure is 'unusual' for the purposes of the Eighth Amendment," he said.

The court's ruling was based on the Constitution's Eighth Amendment prohibition against cruel and unusual punishment.

Strange said he didn't expect the ruling to be applied retroactively to others whose sentences are already final. And while Miller will get another sentencing hearing, "the prosecution will have a compelling argument that he should receive a life-without-parole sentence," he said.

In Arkansas, prosecutor Scott Ellington said he expected the state Supreme Court to notify prosecutors, lawyers for Jackson and any others affected by the ruling to tell them what happens next. "The speculation is that those cases that are affected in this case will have to have a new sentencing hearing," Ellington said.

According to data provided to the court, roughly 2,500 people are behind bars for life with no chance of winning their freedom for murders they committed before their 18th birthday. More than 2,000 of them were there because the sentence was mandated by a legislature.

Advocates say 79 of them are in prison for crimes that took place when they were 14 or younger.

The cases were Miller v. Alabama, 10-9646 and Jackson v. Hobbs, 10-9647.

Carly Rae Jepsen Featured in Billboard, Shocked by Success

She's been number-one on the Billboard music chart, so it's only nature that Carly Rae Jepsen would now be featured on the cover of Billboard magazine.

Carly Rae Jepsen Billboard Magzine Cover

In the publication's latest issue, the wildly successful singer - she sings "Call Me Maybe," perhaps you've of it? - opens up about her recent professional journey - from struggling artist... to Justin Bieber record label signee... to top of the music world in a matter of months - and expresses nothing but shock.

“Pretty much every day, there’s a moment where I’m having to pinch myself and think, ‘When did this happen to my life?’” Carly says.

But it doesn't sound like Jepsen has let her tidal wave of fame and fortune go to her head. She adds that she still appreciates the nuances of song writing.

“What I really love about [music] is that, despite all this craziness the creative process remains the same. And that same exciting feeling that I had before anybody knew me, when I was just beginning to work on ‘Call Me Maybe,’ is the same feeling I had today with RedFoo from LMFAO.

"You can sense the people who really have it are about writing that right word or that right melody to make it lift and make you feel that perfect emotion.”

Jepsen has come out with a new song. She teams with Owl City on "Good Time." Take a listen now!

Illinois trying to buck falling attendance trend in college basketball

CHAMPAIGN ? Section 17 in Duke?s cozy Cameron Indoor Stadium is sacred ground in college basketball.

The 1,200-seat stretch of bleachers across the court from the team benches is home to the Cameron Crazies, Duke?s student section that?s as big a part of college basketball as the home-court advantage, Dickie V and, dare we say, March Madness.

Yet Cameron hasn?t been immune to a problem seen across the country: falling attendance.

Duke sometimes sells 550 unused student seats in Section 17 to adult fans to keep Cameron full, and that reflects a trend: It?s easier to get a ticket to a college basketball game these days.

?Part of the discussion is, ?Hey, if it?s not happening at Duke, we?re all in trouble,? Bradley athletic director Michael Cross said.

College basketball attendance averages fell this year for the fifth consecutive season. According to a study conducted by the Chronicle of Higher Education, nearly one in five Division I men?s basketball programs saw attendance fall by 20 percent or more over the past four seasons. Including the regular season and NCAA tournament, overall attendance has fallen by an average of 348 fans per game since 2007.

The slide is a growing topic among college coaches and administrators.

?There?s always a concern when you have revenue streams going down,? Missouri Valley Conference commissioner Doug Elgin said.

Sometimes the decline in attendance is based on the product on the court. Otherwise, it?s blamed on the economy, a regular season overshadowed by March Madness or the saturation of games on television, not to mention the HD home theaters that turn a couch into a luxury box. Late-night made-for-TV game times and the transient nature of today?s game also play a role.

Success sells

Basketball ticket revenue often accounts for 5 percent to 10 percent of a major-college athletic budget, and nothing sells tickets like putting a winner on the floor. When Dee Brown, Deron Williams and the gang were the big deal at Illinois in 2005, Assembly Hall was packed.

The school put together a streak of 60 consecutive sellouts and had an average capacity crowd of 16,618 for three seasons, ending in 2008. At one point, the Illini filled the Hall with season ticket holders for four consecutive years and ranked ninth nationally in attendance.

Last season, Illinois stood 14th in the country in attendance after falling to an average of 14,986 (counting a ?home?? game against UNLV at the United Center in Chicago). The number, like elsewhere, reflected tickets sold.

?If you?re spending a lot on marketing and not having success on the field of competition, you?re not moving the needle a lot,? said Illinois athletic director Mike Thomas, who fired coach Bruce Weber after the Illini missed the NCAA tournament for the third time in five seasons.

Despite the saturation of the Big Ten Network in the conference footprint, the league led national attendance numbers for the 36th straight year while averaging 12,868 fans per game.

Meanwhile, the Atlantic Coast Conference ranked fifth nationally among conferences after falling 12 percent in the past four years to 9,876 per game. The Pac-12 dropped to 7,143 ? a 17 percent loss over the same span ? in part because of struggles on the court. The Big East and SEC also have seen slight declines, while the Big 12 remained steady.

Overexposure

But winning isn?t everything. Florida State finished third in the ACC but had an 8 percent drop in ticket sales from the previous year. And let?s not forget Section 17 at Duke.

March Madness is the elephant in the room. To the casual fan, it?s the only time to watch college hoops.

?The regular season isn?t going to be as attractive,? said Jim Haney, the executive director of the National Association of College Basketball Coaches. ?Maybe not as much to the avid fan, but the casual fan is more intrigued by a championship than he is necessarily with the regular season.?

The number of televised games and the late-night tipoffs often keep folks at home. With HD, Xbox, the Internet and multiple games at the touch of the remote control, perhaps there?s nothing more fan friendly than the couch.

?The longer they?re at home at night, the harder it is to get them out and get them into your building,? Cross said.

Cross says game times play a key role: With TV setting so many late tipoffs, it hurts attendance at the benefit of more TV coverage.

?If I choose to go to a game at 9 on a Monday night, I?ve got to be pretty darn invested,? Cross said. ?TV has become so much of a driver in the decision-making. I don?t even think it gets debated anymore. If ESPN says play at 9 o?clock, I don?t know if people are discussing, ?No, we don?t want to do it.? People want that exposure.?

The glut runs for five months. The season starts in early November and runs into April.

?It?s a supply-and-demand thing. There?s a ton of supply out there now,? said new Illinois coach John Groce. ?When we were growing up, you saw a Big Ten game, or Kansas, Kentucky, UCLA or North Carolina.?

Groce coached at mid-major Ohio University last season, and the Bobcats were shown on five different outlets.

Power conferences overcome losses in ticket sales with massive TV deals, such as the Big Ten Network paying each conference school $7.9 million last season.

Rule No. 1 framed on Cross? wall: ?The more prosperous a sport becomes, the more likely it is to destroy the reasons for its prosperity.?

Somewhere, the integrity and traditions that made the game so great were lost in the money. It goes much further than NCAA violations from coaches looking to cash a big paycheck. It?s schools jumping to different conferences and thus eliminating long-standing rivalries; players leaving after one year for the NBA or another school for more playing time; and a schedule loaded with patsies before Christmas.

Going south

At Southern Illinois, there?s plenty of rebuilding to do after former Salukis coach Chris Lowery only won 36 games over the previous three seasons. Attendance dropped at SIU Arena from 7,743 during the run to the Sweet 16 in 2007 to 3,299 last season.

Coach Barry Hinson signed a contract paying him $250,000 a season before increases in the next three seasons. His main bonus incentive comes from ticket revenue. Once SIU reaches $850,000 in ticket revenue per season, Hinson gets a bump. It?s one way an athletic department strapped for cash can repay a successful coach.

?If we?re making money, Barry is sharing in the money,? said SIU athletic director Mario Moccia. ?That also asks the coach to keep promoting to come out to the ballgames.?

Mid-majors often have a smaller number of home games because they don?t have revenues to buy guarantee dates. Thus, home games could be a bigger deal, especially in a smaller market with less competition from TV coverage or elsewhere for the entertainment dollar.

?It?s kind of like, ?You don?t want to miss any home games,?? Moccia said. ?This is the place to be. I don?t feel TV hurts us.?

That?s the battle, from Duke?s Section 17 to Carbondale and all points in between.

"Bite My Tongue"

Hi! Welcome to Bite My Tongue! I got the idea for this while watching You Me At Six's video for Bite My Tongue. Anyway, if you have any questions, post them here!

Here's the outline for each band, due to a little confusion.

Dulce et Decorum- Similar to You Me At Six. Their music is more like Sinners Never Sleep than any of their other albums. Some songs are very dark, whereas others are lighter.

Tempore- Similar to Paramore's darker side, e.g Monster, My Heart, Turn It Off, etc.

Panem et Circenses- The Metal Band. Can range from Bring Me The Horizon to Megadeth/Slayer.

Beautifully amazing idea for a roleplay, I must say. It's also a very good way of getting Rock/Metal/Alternative fans together.

My question was what songs would the bands play? I suppose they'd have to agree on one in the OOC.

This sounds like an awesome idea! ^.^ I really like it. So, anime pictures instead of real-life? Just making sure. ;P

Man, I could totally go for this, but I'm not really into alternative rock. But you did say metal is okay, so...would thrash metal be permissible for Panem et Circenses? Something like Nocturnal Breed, or possibly early Megadeth/Slayer?

I am not, in fact, a woman. Apparently, I have to affirm this. :v

@DarknessUndying- Thanks! It depends on the type of band. It would be up to the members of the band. However, I think I might set outlines for each band, just to clarify.

@currysawcc- Anything, whichever is easiest to find.

@The Painkiller- Yeah, okay. I'll edit the opening post to include the types of band for each.
