?Events Ashore? from renowned photographer and film-maker An My Le, who has consistently challenged the role, purpose and strategy of military operations as a theatre of fact and fiction, is on display at the San Art in Binh Thanh District.

Le?s work provides a powerful doorway to the social and political responsibilities of contemporary military life.

Born in Saigon in 1960, she is a professor of Photography at Bard College in New York where she now lives and works.

HRC presents array of rock performances

Ha Noi Rock City (HRC) will host duos Xu Shaoyang and Sha Sha from Hong Kong and Zippy Doiron (Canada) and Jordan Senior (UK) tomorrow.

Influenced by bands and artists such as The Pastels, Dan Hill, Tori Kudo, Joao Gillberto and Faye Wong, Xu has created his own unique style mixing blues, Chinese pop and soul. He has spent 10 years touring Europe, America and Asia.

Japanese artist exhibits first video in HCM

The first solo video exhibition of Japanese artist Meiro Koizumi, Human Opera: Meiro Koizumi, will open at San Art in HCM City on February 24.

The exhibition will feature two video works titled Human Opera XXX (2005) and My Voice Would Reach You (2009). They represent the human spirit?s dilemma in dealing with the complex contradictions of urban life.

Born in Gunma in 1976, Koizumi currently lives and works in Yokohama in Japan. He studied at Chelsea Art and Design School in London and Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten Institute in Amsterdam. His works have been shown in major museums around the world.

The exhibition will run until March 23 at 3 Me Linh Street in Binh Thanh District.

Indiana measles outbreak illustrates disease risk (AP)

INDIANAPOLIS ? Indiana is battling its second measles outbreak in two years, even though its vaccination rate exceeds the national average. Health officials say the cases, traced to a Super Bowl event, illustrate just how vulnerable the public is to exposure from sources at home and abroad.

The 13 cases confirmed this month by state health officials have been confined to two counties, Boone and Hamilton. But all cases are linked to two infected people who visited the Super Bowl Village together on Feb. 3, prompting Indiana officials to reach out to health departments in New York and Massachusetts ? home of the participating New England Patriots and New York Giants ? for fear that the outbreak could spread across state lines.

Concerns about a widespread outbreak are well-founded, said University of Minnesota professor Kristen Ehresmann, who was part of a research team that studied the disease's spread across a large sporting event.

In 1991, a track and field runner from Argentina participating in the Special Olympics in Minneapolis unknowingly started an outbreak of measles, infecting spectators, athletes and event organizers.

"This was kind of Murphy's Law of disease transmission, with a highly infectious disease in a very, very crowded place so as to spread the disease as much as possible," Ehresmann said.

The Super Bowl setting has the same potential to spread the notoriously infectious disease, even though health officials in 2000 declared endemic measles ? cases of the disease that originated in the United States ? to be eliminated, due largely to increasing vaccination rates.

About 90 percent of all Americans are vaccinated against measles, said Dr. Greg Wallace of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. And in Indiana, more than 92 percent of children ages 19 months to 35 months received the vaccine in 2010, the latest year for which figures are available.

But concerns over the vaccine's safety ? widely dismissed by researchers as unfounded ? have led some parents to decide against immunizing their children. In 2005, an outbreak of 34 measles cases in Indiana were traced back to a group of parents who didn't vaccinate their children, according to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

In other countries, vaccination rates are dropping, which raises the risk of exposure. The number of cases in Western Europe has particularly spiked, with France reporting the third-highest number of measles cases in the world. More than 750 people have contracted measles in an ongoing outbreak in Quebec, Canada, despite the country's high immunization rate.

The U.S. typically sees about 50 cases of measles each year. But there were 223 cases in 2011 ? a 15-year high. Officials said the increase was due to Americans picking up the disease while abroad. Three-quarters of U.S. measles cases can be traced to importation, with the rest originating from contact with a visitor from another country, Wallace said.

Indiana's outbreak has prompted state health officials to issue near-daily updates on the number of cases and places visited by those infected in hopes of stopping the disease's spread. In Noblesville, where a suspected measles case has been reported, school officials have been cleaning classrooms and canceling evening activities. Spokeswoman Sharon Trisler said 98 percent of Noblesville students are immunized against the disease, and the rest are being asked to get the vaccine.

Wallace said health departments are typically able to control outbreaks as long as they catch them early, and doesn't predict a large-scale resurgence of measles in Indiana so long as immunization rates remain steady.

Ehresmann hopes news reports of cases at the Super Bowl remind people that measles are dangerous and contagious.

"You never know when it's possible to have an exposure," she said. "Who would think the Super Bowl would have any link or tie to the measles?"

Okay, So I?ve got about $ 9000 that?s been sitting in my Starone.org credit union earning 5%. Well I?ve just finished reading the Wealthy Barber , Richest Man in Babylon & Dave Ramsey books. They all seem to say I should open a Mutual Fund with a good portfolio manager. Can someone tell me where I can start researching this. Better yet. Can someone just list a few examples of Mutual funds I can throw some of the money in now while I research things as I go?

Any other suggestions welcome. But I?m getting tired of researching things on my own right now only getting more lost.

Start with a lifecycle or target date fund. These are mutual funds where the fund management company does the work of allocating your money into a diversified portfolio of assets. Each such fund has a ?target year,? which is the year investors in the fund plan to retire. The fund is invested in a way that will hopefully provide a good long term return by that year. You pick a fund with a target year around the time you hope to retire. For example, if you are 35 now and plan to retire in about 30 years, pick a fund with a target year of 2035 (these funds usually have target years in multiples of 5, like 2030, 2035, 2040, etc.).

Vanguard is a low cost mutual fund management company and calls these funds ?Target Retirement? funds. Fidelity is another mutual fund management company, probably not quite as inexpensive as Vanguard, but still a pretty good deal for these types of funds. Fidelity calls them ?Freedom Funds.?

Updated at 10:00 a.m. ET -- A five-year-old girl has been found alive in the rubble of a house flattened by a massive avalanche that killed at least nine people, including her parents, in a remote mountain village in southern Kosovo.

Col. Shemsi Syla, a spokesman for the Kosovo Security Force, said the girl was discovered in the ruins ? buried under 10 meters (33 feet) of snow ? when officers heard her voice and the ringing of a cell phone.

Osman Qerreti, an emergency official at the site, told The Associated Press that at least nine people died in the avalanche that hit the village of Restelica near Kosovo's border with Macedonia and Albania Saturday, destroying seven houses of which only two were inhabited. The rescuers were looking for one more person.

In Serbia, which declared a state of emergency last week, 19 people have died in the cold snap so far. Economists said damage from the cold weather may cost the country more than 500 million euros ($660 million).

More than 2,000 industrial businesses have been idled to limit the strain on coal-fired power plants and hydropower plants, which were struggling because of the buildup of ice.

The government also ordered the closure of all schools and non-essential businesses until Feb. 20.

Port authorities for Serbian sections of the Danube, Sava and Tisa rivers halted navigation due to a heavy buildup of ice.

About 150 showed up at an open house Feb. 1 to give their two cents about how the Washington Department of Natural Resources should manage 53,000 acres of newly acquired land referred to as the Snoqualmie Corridor. And those ideas often conflicted from one user group to another.

Doug McClelland, assistant region manager for the South Puget Sound Region, led the presentation part of the open house, held at Snoqualmie Middle School.

He said the main planning focus is going to be on the Middle Fork Snoqualmie area and the Raging River State Forest, to decide what recreational opportunities should be in the area, and whether any areas should be closed to recreation.

?We want to see how we should manage these areas for the next 10 to 15 years,? he said. ?And we want to see if there are opportunities for connections to other areas. Not just DNR lands to DNR lands, but also DNR lands to North Bend, Snoqualmie, Issaquah and Preston.?

Those ?connections? could be roads, multiuse recreational trails or commuter bike routes.

Laura Cooper, a University of Washington graduate student helping the department with the project, told the group that the open house was the first of seven phases the project would go through before possible adoption in fall 2013.

She said the department would take a close look at the land itself, taking into account riparian, wetland and other habitats. Officials are also going to inventory fish-bearing and nonfish-bearing streams and conduct biological and geographical mappings of the area.

The department set up listening stations, where personnel listed feedback from the public about topics such as trail connections, current recreation uses at Middle Fork Snoqualmie and Mount Si, and concerns about opening up more areas to recreation.

As soon as people said they would like to see better access to trails already in the area, another person would say that a paved road takes away from the natural beauty and ruggedness of the area.

A man named Brad, who didn?t want to give his last name, said he?s concerned that paved roads would increase what?s already prolific in the area, ?beer bottles and used condoms.?

Additionally, department staff had written down that one person asked for better equestrian access and camping, but the very next comment was to minimize horse trails due to high maintenance costs.

A woman from the Snoqualmie Tribe wanted to make sure that all sacred tribal sites were protected, while another woman said she was concerned about the spread of noxious weeds and wanted to make sure the department had a plan in place for quick eradication. Mountain bikers expressed their concerns about losing their network of illegal trails. As it stands now, there is one legal mountain bike trail in the area, off the Little Fork Trail. It?s a multiuse trail, and mountain bikers can only use it every other day and only in the summer, said Mike, who would not give his last name.

Because of limited trails for mountain bikers, several ?bootleg? trails have been created in the past four to 10 years, he said.

?And they are very well- maintained and not creating any erosion problems,? he said.

But the public also listed illegal mountain bike trails as a concern in the corridor.

McClelland said people could sign up for email updates and that an online survey would be available soon for more public input.

Ryan Reynolds and Denzel Washington get plenty of action in their new thriller "Safe House," which revolves around Reynolds' character trying to prevent the escape/kidnapping of a dangerous rogue CIA agent (Washington) from the safe house where he works.

When MTV News caught up with Reynolds, we asked him why this story is more intriguing than most action thrillers, as well as whether he's had any real-life fighting experience to bring an extra edge to his character.

"It's such a great character piece," Reynolds said of the film's appeal. "You have two characters that are obviously diametrically opposed but they're sort of marching toward one another as opposed to away from one another. My character is an idealist, he is basically a sociopath. They're taking slow, steady steps toward each other, and by the end they're kind of integrating," he explained. "Factor in Denzel Washington, who is one of the greatest living actors today, and [director] Daniel Espinosa, who is a young guy with a fresh take on the genre."

With regard to the hand-to-hand fighting in the film, we asked Reynolds to take us through the last time he was in an actual fight.

"I was in Amsterdam and I was probably about 20," Reynolds recalled. "People can wander around a little affected there, and this guy was on something funny and he just came at me. I don't know what he did but he just came at me. I was 20 years old and it was all a blur. I ended up in this quick little brawl and then it was over. Then the next thing I knew the police were escorting me to the train station and asking me to leave. Not because I was in trouble, but because they thought, 'If this guy sees you again, he's going to stab you.' I was escorted off the city limits."

Key finding in stem cell self-renewal

ScienceDaily (Feb. 6, 2012) ? A University of Minnesota-led research team has proposed a mechanism for the control of whether embryonic stem cells continue to proliferate and stay stem cells, or differentiate into adult cells like brain, liver or skin.

The work has implications in two areas. In cancer treatment, it is desirable to inhibit cell proliferation. But to grow adult stem cells for transplantation to victims of injury or disease, it would be desirable to sustain proliferation until a sufficient number of cells have been produced to make a usable organ or tissue.

The study gives researchers a handle on how those two competing processes might be controlled. It was performed at the university's Hormel Institute in Austin, Minn., using mouse stem cells. The researchers, led by Hormel Institute Executive Director Zigang Dong and Associate Director Ann M. Bode, have published a report in the journal Nature: Structure and Molecular Biology.

"This is breakthrough research and provides the molecular basis for development of regenerative medicine," said Dong. "This research will aid in the development of the next generation of drugs that make repairs and regeneration within the body possible following damage by such factors as cancer, aging, heart disease, diabetes, or paralysis caused by traumatic injury."

The mechanism centers on a protein called Klf4, which is found in embryonic stem cells and whose activities include keeping those cells dividing and proliferating rather than differentiating. That is, Klf4 maintains the character of the stem cells; this process is called self-renewal. The researchers discovered that two enzymes, called ERK1 and ERK2, inactivate Klf; this allows the cells to begin differentiating into adult cells.

The two enzymes are part of a "bucket brigade" of signals that starts when a chemical messenger arrives from outside the embryonic stem cells. Chemical messages are passed to inside the cells, resulting in, among other things, the two enzymes swinging into action.

The researchers also discovered how the enzymes control Klf4. They attach a small molecule--phosphate, consisting of phosphorus and oxygen--to Klf4. This "tag" marks it for destruction by the cellular machinery that recycles proteins.

Further, they found that suppressing the activity of the two enzymes allows the stem cells to maintain their self-renewal and resist differentiation. Taken together, their findings paint a picture of the ERK1 and ERK2 enzymes as major players in deciding the future of embryonic stem cells--and potentially cancer cells, whose rapid growth mirrors the behavior of the stem cells.

Klf4 is one of several factors used to reprogram certain adult skin cells to become a form of stem cells called iPS (induced pluripotent stem) cells, which behave similarly to embryonic stem cells. Also, many studies have shown that Klf4 can either activate or repress the functioning of genes and, in certain contexts, act as either an oncogene (that promotes cancer) or a tumor suppressor. Given these and their own findings reported here, the Hormel Institute researchers suggest that the self-renewal program of cancer cells might resemble that of embryonic stem cells.

"Although the functions of Klf4 in cancer are controversial, several reports suggest Klf4 is involved in human cancer development," Bode said.

Cargill Philanthropies, which was funded in 2011 with gifts that the Chronicle placed at $6 billion. Cargill, needless to say, was No. 1 in the rankings.

The Chronicle?s methodology on arts giving among Philanthropy 50 wasn?t sufficiently fine-tuned to capture all the arts interests of top donors.

For example, the Chronicle did not identify Cargill as a cultural donor, because it counted all $6 billion as a gift to a foundation, rather than one that would benefit the arts. But Cargill?s will specified that Native American culture and folk art will be one of the areas funded regularly through her foundations ?- potentially yielding millions of dollars in annual arts giving.

Eli and Edythe Broad ranked 49th on the list, with $27 million donated to their Broad Foundations, but the Chronicle didn?t count any of it as an arts-specific gift. But contemporary art is one of four causes the foundations support, and the Broad Art Foundation?s average annual spending from 2008 to 2010 was $4.8 million, according to its federal tax returns.

The Broads are likely to have a spot reserved in the Philanthropy 50 in the next few years as they begin funding the downtown Broad Collection museum -- to the tune of $130 million for construction and $200 million for an endowment. The parking garage beneath the museum is almost finished, Broad spokeswoman Karen Denne said Friday, with construction on the museum itself expected to begin next month.

Also not broken out separately was the arts component of a $65 million gift to Ohio State University from Leslie and Abigail Wexner (ranked 21st), partly to fund the school?s Wexner Center for the Arts.

The top individual cultural gifts noted by the Chronicle were $70 million to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond, by Arthur and Margaret Glasgow, the lion?s share of a $125 million bequest that ranked them ninth; $35 million for the Miami Science Museum from Philip and Patricia Frost (37th); $30 million for the Miami Art Museum from Jorge Perez (tied for 43rd); $30 million for a new arts complex at Columbia University in New York, and $5 million for the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia from Gerry and Marguerite Lenfest (17th).

The list also noted $25 million to Yad Vashem, the Holocaust memorial in Israel, from Sheldon and Miriam Adelson (tied for 43rd); $17.4 million for the U.S. Holocaust Memorial in Washington and $1.75 million for the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark from Eric Ross (16th); $12 million for the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington from David Rubinstein (20th); $7.6 million for the Experience Music Project and the Science Fiction Museum in Seattle? from Paul Allen (who ranked second to Cargill with total gifts of $372.6 million); $5 million for the San Diego Symphony from Irwin and Joan Jacobs (ranked 22nd with $64.9 million total giving); and $1 million for San Diego Opera from Conrad Prebys (ranked 24th with total donations of $63.1 million).

The Chronicle noted that 14 of the Philanthropy 50 are Californians -? the most of any state, and 22 institutions in the state received largess from people on the list, also tops in the nation.

It also found that those doing the heaviest philanthropic lifting in 2011 were not necessarily those with the biggest piles -? only 21 of the 50 were on Forbes magazine?s list of the 400 richest Americans. The Chronicle reported that Warren Buffett and Bill and Melinda Gates didn?t make the Philanthropy 50 for 2011 because it only counts new commitments; most of their charity went toward fulfilling multiyear pledges they?d made previously.

?Momentum for Life? | Willis Wired

At the recent Bishop?s Retreat, with guest Mike Slaughter, I picked up Mike?s book, Momentum for Life: Biblical Practices for Sustaining Physical Health, Personal Integrity, and Strategic Focus. I love that the book sprinkles references to the Psalms of Ascent (Psalms 120-134) throughout the book. And, using the acronym D.R.I.V.E., the book focuses on five basic life disciplines that create momentum for life, including ?

• Devotion to God
• Readiness for lifelong learning
• Investing in key relationships
• Visioning for the future
• Eating and Exercise for life

At first, I thought the five phrases were hard to remember, but now that I?ve been working with them a while, I can easily remember them.

A common refrain in the book is, ?All leadership begins with self-leadership? (3). Mike says, ?You can?t lead anyone farther than you?re leading yourself? (31).

Devotion to God

Devotion brings me back to my true center. My work is not the center of my journey, nor is ministry the center of my life; God is. My identity is that of a servant. (40)

In the early days of my spiritual journey, in college, I read biographies and journals of great spiritual leaders to learn more about their devotional practices. I learned early on, and was inspired by the fact, that great spiritual leaders were disciplined in their prayer lives!

A daily life practice of being fully present to God?s presence is the foundation of all other disciplines. (42)

Readiness for Lifelong Learning

Growth and fruitfulness go hand in hand. (47)

God is looking for people with flexible minds that can receive new ideas and for people who will let those ideas be manifested into physical reality. ? The obstacle to forward momentum is old thinking. (51)

Investing in Key Relationships

Mike discusses the priority of family. He also talks about mentoring relationships.

We miss out on life and meaning if we are not making relationships a priority on any given day. (70) ? Life is not about stuff we own or accumulate. It is not about personal accomplishment. Life is about people. We can replace stuff, but we can?t replace people. (71)

We get into trouble when we allow our work to fill the margins that are meant for our relationships. (72) ? Each of us is responsible for our own schedule, for how we will order today. If I don?t prioritize how and with whom I spend my time, circumstances and other people will decide for me. (74)

The ultimate test of success is not what we accomplish or achieve but whom we develop. ? You make an impact in the world by making a difference in the lives of other people. ? Whatever your type of work, the priority is building people. (80)

Visioning for the Future

Vision is the natural result of living in the fulness of the Holy Spirit. ? Through the Holy Spirit we have access to the mind of Christ, which enables us to have connection to the limitless ideas of God. (87)

Mike writes, ?I take time every day to visualize God?s preferred future? (93). He admits, ?If I am not taking time every day to envision a better reality, I will reach my picture and retire? (90).

God entrusts vision to those who will faithfully execute it, and the size of vision God gives us is dependent on our faithfulness in implementing strategic action. ? God wants to do incredible things, but he will not give you a vision that exceeds the size of the faith-steps you are willing to take. (100) ? God gives big visions to people who are willing to take big actions! (101)

Eating and Exercise for Life

The chapter on eating and exercise is based on the premise that ?Life is a gift to be embraced and celebrated to the max? (107).

It is tempting for us to dissociate what we eat and whether we exercise from our commitments to God, but our bodies are not our own. We have been purchased, body-mind-spirit, with the redemptive work of God through Jesus? life, death, and resurrection. Eating healthy foods and making a disciplined commitment to exercise is not optional for the committed follower of Jesus. It is one of the essential daily life disciplines of discipleship. (109)

Mike contends, ?Your time of death is not predetermined. It is affected by your life practices and choices? (110). He lists several factors that influence longevity ?

• Attitude
• Relationships
• Genes
• Mental activity
• Exercise
• Diet

I do better in some of these areas than in others. The book was a challenging reminder to me that grow in each of these areas. The book is pretty practical. I didn?t expect a lot of new, earth-shattering stuff in the book, but Mike did a good job of being practical and building it on a biblical foundation. It was an encouraging read.
