Smoking increases the risk of colorectal cancer | Health And ...

Thun and colleagues tested the long-term association between smoking and colorectal cancer, after adjusting for multiple other factors that are generally associated with risk, including screening. From 1992 to 2005, the researchers followed almost 185,000 participants aged 50 to 74 years, the participants described their behaviors and medical conditions. These results have contributed to the evidence reviewed by the International Agency for Research on Cancer in October this year, said Thun. IARC upgraded the evidence that smoking causes cancer of the colon cancer from ?limited? to ?sufficient?.

A history of fracture at least doubles the risk of future fracture patients, but numerous studies from around the world have found that health systems are unable to respond to the first fracture to prevent future fractures. Health systems are clearly failing to respond to the first fracture that is, unfortunately, a missed opportunity for intervention. In all world, millions of people go to live off of hip fractures and potentially fatal, at great cost to the individual and health systems.

Participants who smoked cigarettes for 40 years or more, or who have stopped smoking before age 40, had a 30 % to 50 % increased risk of developing colon or rectal cancer during the follow-up, even in analysis which he held for 13 potential risk factors, according to Thun After 13 years of follow up, the researchers identified 1962 cases of invasive carcinoma of the colon and rectum.

It gives one more reason not to smoke or to quit as soon as possible, said lead author Michael J. Thun, MD, MS, vice president emeritus, epidemiology and surveillance research at the American Cancer Society. The cancer of the colon and rectum should be added to the list of cancers caused by smoking.

While previous studies in large long-term smokers showed similar results, Thun stated that this is the first study of screening and monitoring for all suspected risk factors for cancer of the colon and rectum, such as alcohol consumption, physical inactivity and consumption of red meat or processed.
