COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -James McCarthy and Marc-Antoine Fortune scored in the second half and Roger Espinoza had a successful homecoming as England's Wigan Athletic defeated the Columbus Crew 2-1 in an exhibition match on Saturday.
Espinoza, who played for Ohio State in 2007, entered at the start of the second half and within seconds crossed the ball to McCarthy for a header and a 1-0 lead in the 46th minute.
Fortune made it 2-0 in the 63rd but Ryan Finley cut the deficit 10 minutes later when he chipped in from a deflected pass from Eric Gehrig.
Wigan, winners of the FA Cup - the world's oldest football tournament - in May, is on its first preseason trip to the United States.
