Sukkot Music Events Abound in Israel
There seems to be no limit to the number of musical events taking place over the Sukkot holiday in Israel. Schools, public institutions and many businesses will be on vacation. The Israel Beat Jewish Music Podcast is Arutz Sheva's window into the Jewish and Israeli music scene. Many of the following events has been covered in the past and will be covered in future episodes.

The following is just a brief list of the many events taking place during the Sukkot holiday.
The 2012 ProgStage festival will take place October 4th - 6th and will feature top name Israeli rock groups. The event will be held at Dugal beach at the Sea of Galilee (Lake Kinneret). Top rated Israeli band Orphaned Land will headline the festival. They are known for combining metal with Sephardic and Middle Eastern music. Foreign acts will include Osada Vida, The Flower Kings, Andromeda, and Pain of Salvation. Fourteen other Israeli bands will perform as well.
The 4th annual RockAmi festival will feature top name Jewish musicians. Chaim David, Shlomo Katz and Soulfarm will perform over the Sukkot holiday. The event will take place on October 4th at the Beit Yehudit - The International Cultural Center For Youth in Jerusalem. All proceeds directly benefit the Lone Soldier Center in memory of Michael Levin. The center works with Israel Defense Force soldiers who moved to Israel alone without any family members in the country. For a past article about the RockAmi festival click here.
Two of the most popular musical acts on the Jewish music scene will perform in Jerusalem for a special benefit concert. Lipa Schmeltzer, known for his yeshivish style music and wacky and creative videos will perform alongside 8th Day, a Jewish pop / rock group. Popular Israeli singer Yishai Lapidot will be the opening act. Proceeds from the concert will benefit United Hatzalah, Israel's largest volunteer-based emergency medical technician service. The event will take place on the Sukkot holiday Oct. 6th at the Jerusalem Theater.
The Beit El Heritage Center is hosting tours of the historic site of the Jacob's ladder dream.
On a hilltop overlooking Beit El, a stone building approximately 1,000 years old stands on top a large natural bedrock. Judy Simon, host of Israel National Radio's "Life Lessons" and tourism coordinator for Beit El, will be conducting the visits in both English and Hebrew. For more information click here.
The Derech Beit Lechem Bread Festival will take place in the Geulim neighborhood of Jerusalem. Also, known as Baka, the neighborhood features many historic Middle Eastern buildings. It's main thoroughfare, Bethlehem Street as the ancient route from Jerusalem to the city of Bethlehem and might remain so today if it didn't dead-end at the Talpiot Industrial Zone.
Bethlehem Street will be closed starting at 5pm on Wednesday. Oct 3rd. Musical acts and arts and crafts will be available for children and adults including painting, dance and bread making. A sukkah on the street will be hosted by Rabbi Avraham and Dina Hendel of Beit Levi - Chabad of Baka. For coverage of last year's fair click here.
The Hendels are also sponsoring a Sukkah party on Thursday with music and refreshments at the Baka Farm School on Yehuda Street. The school which teaches agriculture is also home to Yad Gedaliah, a social service organization set up in memory of Gedaliah Mellick, a fallen Israeli soldier.
The bi-annual Moshav Country Fair will take place October 3rd at Moshav Me'Or Modi'im. The small agricultural community was founded by Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach in the 1970s. The event will take place during the holiday of Sukkot. Featured musicians will include Aryeh ben Chayim Guiloff, Baruch Shapiro, Yerachmiel Ziegler, Benyamin Steinberg, Shtar, Josh Laufer, BenZion Lehrer, Shlomo Katz, BenZion Solomon and Sons,? Hamakor, Ktoret, Jah Levy, Shivi Keller and Aryeh Naftali and the Elevators. For coverage of the past fair click here.
The Moishe House in Jerusalem will be sponsoring a sukkah party on October 5th featuring a musical jam session, a yoga class and guest speakers which will discuss Torah and spirituality. Moishe House is an international program that has opened locations around the world in which young Jewish activists live in a house and organized outreach activities and Shabbat dinners. The Jerusalem location opened up several months ago.
The Tamar Festival in the Negev region will be hosting some of the most well known names in contemporary Israeli music. The musical performances will take place in nature reserves such as Wadi Zohar and at the foot of Mount Masada. Well known singers will include Gidi Gov, Yehuda Poliker, Yehudit Ravitz, Barry Sacharoff, Mashina Asaf Avidan and more. The festival lasts October 1st - October 4th.
Zedekiahs Cave under the Old City of Jerusalem will host a Sukkot concert on Wednesday Oct 3rd. The ancient quarry in-between the Shchem Gate and the Flower Gate will reverberate with the sounds of the Razel Brothers, Aharon and Yonatan, who are known for their hassidic and pop style music, Chilik Frank and the Lev HaMaayan Band, known for their fast-paced danceable klezmer music, Chizki Sofer, who sings in the style of Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach and Yossi Schwartz and Elazar Winograd, two well know cantorial singers. The event is being sponsored by Ateret Cohanim.
The annual Hevron music concert will once again take place outside the ancient Cave of Machpelach, where the tombs of the Jewish Patriarchs and Matriarchs rest. The event will be Wednesday October 3rd starting at 1:00 PM and feature Mordechai Ben David, the American Jewish singer who has been one of the most well known hasidic acts for decades. Also on the bill will be Haim Israel, Udi Davidi, Yeedle, Avi Gesner, Shlomo Katz, Ami Cohen and more. For coverage of last year's fstival click here.

Patch 5.0.5 Hotfixes for September 28
A new set of hotfixes have been announced by Blizzard for September 28th. They include various fixes to pet battles, including the repair of a bug that caused pets to inadvertently skip turns, and a fix to get the Win Streak achievement to function as expected.
It's open warfare between Alliance and Horde in Mists of Pandaria, World of Warcraft's next expansion. Jump into five new levels with new talents and class mechanics, try the new monk class, and create a pandaren character to ally with either Horde or Alliance. - Vengeance now ignores overkill damage.
- Arcane Torrent now returns 2% of base mana (was previously an unintended 6%).
- Priest
- Void Shift can no longer be cast on Dominate Mind targets.
- The priest Season 12 four-piece healer set bonus can now only be consumed by the priest that applied it.
- The priest Season 12 two-piece healer set bonus should now grant Diamond Soul buff to other players when Power Word: Shield is cast on them.
- Rogue
- Blind should always land as intended. Other players should not be able to dodge, block, or parry Blind.
- A priest's psyfiend's Psychic Terror should no longer affect targets under a Rogue's Smoke Bomb.
- Warrior
- Second Wind no longer interrupts a Warrior who is eating or sitting down.
- Creatures
- Thieving Plainshawks in Valley of the Four Winds now cast Peck while in combat with players and no longer cast Steal Weapon.
- The humanoids of Pandaria are no longer devoid of coin, and level 86-90 creatures are now occasionally carrying a Vine-Cracked Junkbox in one of their pockets.
- The Hozen Diver in Jade Forest now has 271k health as opposed to the 135k he had before.
- Cheung the Stablemaster should now do the duties of a stablemaster, as expected.
- Items
- An appropriate amount of spell power has been added to Masterwork Forgewire Axe, Amber Spine of Klaxxi'vess, Amber Saber of Klaxxi'vess, and Forgewire Axe.
- Zen Alchemist Stone should now work as intended.
- Mysterious Camel Figurines should again provide the player with the ability to see Dormus.
- The Quilen Statuette now has an item level of 463 (was 384).
- Ancient Pandaren Fishing Charm should work as intended to give the player a chance to catch additional fish.
- Pet Battles
- Turn inputs should no longer sometimes be inadvertently skipped, causing only one pet to take action that turn.
- Conceding in a random PVP Pet Battle should now count as a loss.
- State-dependent abilities should now properly require that the state be present to gain their bonus effects.
- Strong and Pristine Traps should now properly be awarded when the corresponding achievement is obtained.
- The Achievement "Win Streak" should now function as expected, and be awarded to players who win 25 consecutive Pet Battles.
- Quests
- Players should be able to complete "Burning Down the House" as expected.
- "SI:7 Report: Fire From the Sky" should always eject the player from Sully "The Pickle" McLeary's vehicle, and can be completed even if the player dies and returns to camp before completing Sully's event.
- "Last Toll of the Yaungol" should only provide you with Xiao Tu's companionship while you are in Hatred's Vice.
- Players who slip and fall from Serpent's Overlook while on the quest "The Seal is Broken" should be able to find their way back to Serpent's Spine by first returning to Grookin Hill or Pearlfin Village. Do watch your step!
- All of the trainers for both the Horde and Alliance versions of "Battle Pet Tamers: Cataclysm" and "Battle Pet Tamers: Pandaria" now properly apply pet recovery once defeated.
- "Sha Can Awe" quest NPCs should only apply their Languor effect on players who are currently on that quest.
- "Gardener Fran and the Watering Can" now includes a bit more guidance for new horticulturists.
- Bug Fixes
- Loving a Shore Crab in Azshara ... as you do ... now properly counts towards the Achievement "To All The Squirrels I've Loved Before".
- The Luck of the Lotus buff should provide a chance to find Plundered Treasure as intended.
- Crossing a zone boundary while traveling by boat or zeppelin on a multi-passenger mount should no longer result in players being removed from the transport, but may still dismount the passengers from the multi-passenger mount.
- Players can no longer access different Pandaria daily quests by visiting other realms.
- Players visiting other realms via RealID or Battletag groups will no longer receive loot from the Salyis's Warband encounter.

DA won't pursue case against prof in brother's death

Amy Bishop, the biology professor sentenced to life in prison earlier this week for killing three colleagues, will not be prosecuted for murdering her brother in 1986, the Massachusetts district attorney looking at that case said Friday, according to the Boston Globe.
Bishop?s fatal shooting of her younger brother Seth at the family?s home in Braintree, Mass. was dismissed as an accident at the time. But the February 2010 shooting spree that left three of her colleagues dead and three others wounded at the University of Alabama at Huntsville sparked an inquest into Seth Bishop?s death, which was then reopened as a homicide case.
Norfolk District Attorney Michael Morrissey said in a statement Friday that his office would not pursue the first-degree murder charge against Bishop because she is now scheduled to end her life behind bars.
"We will not move to have her returned to Massachusetts," Morrissey said, according to the Globe report. "The penalty we would seek for a first-degree murder conviction is already in place."
The Harvard-educated biologist opened fire at a faculty meeting in February 2010.
Bishop killed her boss, biology department chairman Gopi Padila, plus professors Maria Ragland Davis and Adriel Johnson. Professor Joseph Leahy, staff aide Stephanie Monticciolo and assistant professor Luis Cruz-Vera were wounded.
Colleagues believed Bishop was angry that the school had denied her tenure.
On Sept. 11, Bishop pleaded guilty to first-degree murder charges. By doing so, she avoided a possible death sentence but was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Morrissey said that after talking to his counterpart in Alabama, Madison County District Attorney Robert Broussard, he felt confident that Bishop would never be released from custody, the Globe reported.
His office was planning to file what is known as a "nolle prosequi" next week, which would allow prosecutors to revive the first-degree murder charge against her "if circumstances change," it said.

Is it just me that gets a little bugged by providers who make ads which are either clearly untrue, or simply something they could never prove? I'm not talking about the usual stuff like 24/7 support, but for example .. On WHT right now there's two different VPS offers that both say something like 'the best VPS your money can buy' - well they can't both be true? There's also a banner ad which says 'Best uptime in the industry' - Really? you've monitored every other provider on the planet and can show the stats? Words like "best" are subjective. When I say I'm the best lover in the world that is my opinion and although most women would probably agree with that statement there are going to be some hard core lesbians out there that don't. When a VPS provider says they're the best they probably think they are and there might be others that agree. Best uptime? Maybe they've had 100% uptime on every server (all 1 of them) for the last 5 seconds. It's all about the basis of their claims and the opinion words they use. |

This is the way people advertise their businesses now. I'd have to agree with cd/home, even the industry leaders don't care much about the terms they use. Some of them can be misleading at times, and false advertising later results in a bunch of angry customers who didn't get what they expected. Nice one! Still have the chuckle on my face... In marketing it is often the case one uses subjective assumptions for psychological reasons - when you see words like "best", "top", "quality",and all the "-est"'s out there, the prospect is presumed to want to try the vendor out. And as someone above said, would you seriously consider a company if they said something along the lines of being average or just mainstream? I agree, it may be best to try and leave the meaningless superlatives out of your marketing campaigns, yet, as cheap as it is, it does work on the "lesser" minds, I guess... In this respect, I quite like the rules in Google AdWords, where you're not to provide misleading information, or else your ad comes a cropper. This reminds me the situation when you go to, say, Petticoat Lane Market on Saturday and every seller is shoving their goods in your face with the "best" argument! |

Miami Property Revival Leads the U.S. Housing Recovery | Miami ...
The property revival in Miami has been leading the national housing recovery in 2011 and 2012.

The latest figures from the Miami Association of Realtors reveal that home prices have risen again in August, making Miami the leader of the property revival in the United States. It is the ninth consecutive month of gains, particularly due to buyers from overseas.
According to Property Wire, the median sales price of Miami-Dade condominiums increased 28.4 percent to $146,500 from last year, with prices having now increased for each of the last 14 months. The median sales price of single family homes rose 10.8 percent to 195,000.
Miami Property Revival ? High Sales and Price Increases
Despite the shortage of housing inventory, Miami home sales remain strong and continue to drive significant price appreciation, according to Miami Association of Realtors chairman Martha Pomares. She also mentions there is evident demand for Miami properties, specifically from foreign buyers and investors who recognize their desirability and profitability.
?Miami is the top market for foreign buyers in the nation, and local international activity continues to grow,? Pomares told PropertyWire.
In August, the average sales price for condominiums in Miami-Dade County increased 20.9 percent to $283,497. The average sales prices for single family homes increased 28.4 percent to $408,810. According to data from the Florida Realtors Industry, statewide median sales prices in August increased 5.8 percent to $147,000 for single family homes and 13.2 percent to $102,980 for condominiums.
Total residential sales in Miami-Dade County increased 7 percent compared to record sales levels in August 2011. The sales of existing condominiums in Miami-Dade increased 8 percent from 1,382 to 1,492.
Sales of single family homes increased 5 percent from 1,009 to 1,059, year on year. Statewide sales of existing single-family homes totaled 18,669 in August 2012, up 10.8 percent compared to a year ago. Statewide condominium sales totaled 8,767, up 5.7 percent from those sold in August 2011.

?Miami is experiencing a mini-boom fueled mostly by demand from international buyers, but also by population growth resulting from migration from other states, baby boomers and local consumers,? said Patricia Delinois, Residential President of the Miami Association of Realtors. ?Miami?s firm position as a major global city is expected to continue to draw demand long into the future, as businesses, residents, visitors, tourists, investors and vacation and second homebuyers take advantage of all that our vibrant and unique city has to offer.?
Over the last year, the inventory of residential listings in Miami-Dade County has dropped 26 percent from 15,405 to 11,431. Compared to the previous month, the total inventory of homes decreased 0.2 percent. The figures also show that currently there are 4.2 months of supply in Miami-Dade.
Strong demand for bank owned (REO) properties and improved processing of short sales continues to yield absorption of distressed listings and to contribute to price appreciaiton.
In August, 45.8 percent of all closed residential sales in Miami-Dade County were distressed, including REOs and short sales, compared to 56 percent in August 2011 and 47 percent the previous month. In Miami-Dade County, 64 percent of total closed sales in August were all cash sales, compared to 62 percent in August 2011 and 64 percent the previous month. Cash sales accounted for 45 percent of single family and 78 percent of condominium closings.
Nearly 90 percent of foreign buyers in Florida purchase properties all cash, reflecting the stronger presence of international buyers in the Miami real estate market.

Pending home sales rose 9.6 percent year-over year, down from last month's rise of 15.2 percent and missing estimates of 13.5 percent.
NAR said that "contract activity in July 2012 was at the highest level since April 2010 when buyers were rushing to beat the deadline for the home buyer tax credit."

Existing-home sales this year are expected to rise 9 percent to 4.64 million, and gain another 8 percent in 2013 to nearly 5.02 million. With generally balanced inventory conditions in many areas, the median existing-home price is projected to rise about 5 percent in both 2012 and 2013.
The PHSI in the Northeast rose 0.9 percent to 78.2 in August and is 19.9 percent above August 2011. In the Midwest the index declined 2.6 percent to 95.0 in August but is also 19.9 percent higher than a year ago. Pending home sales in the South slipped 1.1 percent to an index of 110.4 in August but are 13.2 percent above August 2011. With broad inventory shortages in the West, the index fell 7.2 percent in August to 102.5 and is 4.2 percent below a year ago.
Housing starts are forecast to stay on an uptrend and reach 1.12 million next year, but will remain well below long-term underlying demand with builders facing obstacles in obtaining construction loans.
Growth in the Gross Domestic Product should be 2.5 percent in 2013.

Middle East telcos mull alliance in Facebook fight
DUBAI (Reuters) - Middle East telecommunications firms are discussing the idea of creating a pan-Arab online platform that would earn them more revenue from their networks by challenging Facebook and other Internet behemoths of the West.
The ambitious project faces technical and financial obstacles and may never be implemented on a large scale. But proponents argue the common language and culture shared by the world's more than 350 million Arabic speakers, plus the webs of affiliated companies which Gulf operators own across the Middle East and North Africa, could make the project viable.
"A single operator, even one in multiple geographies and with tens of millions of subscribers, can't create this platform on its own," said Osman Sultan, chief executive of du, the second biggest operator in the United Arab Emirates.
"It would be restricted to the customers of this operator and wouldn't have sufficient scale to succeed. But a unified platform spanning the Arab world would," he told Reuters.
Sultan said he had proposed the idea to all major operators in the Arab world over the past 12 months.
Behind the proposal is a frustration shared by telecommunications firms globally: as they spend heavily to build networks, data traffic on the networks is increasing rapidly, but the firms essentially only make money from charging for access to their networks - a low-margin business.
The lion's share of new revenue from traffic is being taken by so-called "over-the-top" (OTT) Internet companies such as Facebook, Google, Apple and Twitter. The telecommunications firms have unsuccessfully pressed them for bigger contributions to the cost of building the networks.
"OTT players...we can't share their gain and they won't share our pain," said Sultan. "Network traffic doubles every eight to nine months, but revenue is heading to a plateau, so we need to claim part of the new revenues alongside OTT players."
VERY DIFFICULT
The proposed Arab online platform would feature social media and online shopping for goods and services, including digital content such as music, video and applications, Sultan said.
He declined to give details, saying parts of the talks were confidential, and most other Arab telecommunications operators contacted by Reuters declined to comment or did not respond to requests for comment
But Sheikh Mohamed Al Khalifa, chief executive of Bahrain Telecommunications Co, welcomed the idea.
"Telcos are beginning to look to the deployment of OTT services such as streamed TV and video-on-demand," he said. "Such diversification (into) adjacent industries has become necessary. There are gains to be made by collaborating within our industry in the Middle East."
Sceptics point to the fact that efforts by telecommunications firms elsewhere in the world to set up online ventures have often failed when faced with the technical savvy and marketing muscle of the established Internet giants.
"Fundamentally, it's very difficult to complete against OTT players - operators lack the agility and the core competencies as well as the brand appeal," said Guillermo Escofet, a senior analyst at Informa Telecom and Media in London.
"They're used to running networks, not being media companies. Also, operators instinctively try to differentiate themselves from each other - it's against their DNA to work together."
London-listed Vodafone is one of a number of operators that have had difficulty creating Internet services. The Vodafone 360 service, based on customers' phone address books, was launched in Europe in 2009, letting customers import contacts from social networks and use an online application store. In 2011, Vodafone said it was winding down the service.
"Operators have failed miserably every time they have tried to move up the value chain, except for in certain business-to-business services," said Pedro Oliveira, a partner at global management consultants Oliver Wyman. "Some have tried to move into content and applications, but the war is lost already."
The big Western Internet firms are already popular around the Middle East. Facebook, which offers an Arabic interface, had 45.2 million users in the Arab world as of June 30, up more than 50 percent from a year earlier, according to the Arab Social Media Report, produced by the Dubai School of Government.
Despite pockets of innovation in the region, such as video game industries in Saudi Arabia and Jordan, and ventures developing applications for smart phones in Egypt, the Middle East has so far not come close to developing online products to rival the top Western Internet companies.
FEASIBLE
However, proponents of the telecommunications firms' online plan argue it is more feasible in the Arab world than elsewhere.
Only about 1 percent of the world's websites are in Arabic, according to a survey by analysts W3techs. Internet penetration lags regions such as Europe, North America and east Asia, with only about 86 million of the estimated 360 million native Arabic speakers online at end-2011, Miniwatts Marketing Group said.
Such figures may mean Western Internet firms are not yet so entrenched in the Middle East that they cannot be challenged. The new online platform would satisfy hunger among the region's young population for more Arabic-language content, said Sultan.
Another factor is the impressive geographical reach of Gulf telecommunications firms; if a few of them can agree on introducing the online platform, they may be able to roll it out quickly across more than a dozen countries.
Combined, Qatar Telecom, Saudi Telecom, Kuwait's Zain and the UAE's Etisalat cover 16 of the 22 Arab League countries. The other six countries are the smallest four in economic terms - Mauritania, Somalia, Djibouti and Comoros - plus war-ravaged Libya and Syria.
The Arab telecommunications operators' extensive distribution networks and point-of-sale advertising could help them win customers from OTT players.
Most Middle Eastern mobile phone subscribers are on pre-paid contracts typically topped up with scratch cards. These are sold everywhere from petrol stations to local stores, so vouchers for the online platform might easily be rolled out alongside them.
"The reach we have to consumers and the knowledge we have of consumer behavior is vast," Sultan said.
Thomas Kuruvilla, managing director of consultants Arthur D. Little Middle East, said an alliance of regional telecommunications firms could form a community of social networks that was attractive to local populations.
If the firms can cooperate on content and social networks, "it will surely attract more niche advertisers and hence higher revenue potential," he said.
However, even if the region's biggest telecommunications firms succeed with the online platform, it will be hard for smaller operators to make much money from it, said Oliveira.
This could consign smaller firms to serving as nothing more than low-margin pipes for the data services of the big ones.
In the Gulf, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Kuwait have multiple telecommunications firms providing Internet access, and some of them may be the most vulnerable to becoming "dumb pipes". Such companies might cut access fees to their networks in an effort to win market share, Oliveira said.
"If one operator takes this approach, then others in the same market may be forced to follow as they lose revenue and market share and struggle to keep on investing in their network," he said. "It's a race to the bottom."

Poet shares the power of self-expression | Globe SLCC
Mayda Del-Valle tells a story to a group of SLCC students.
Acclaimed poet Mayda Del-Valle entertained and recited poetry for students at SLCC on Monday, Sept. 24.The first Latina to win the National Poetry Slam, Del-Valle was invited to speak as part of Latino Heritage Month, and many of the audience members were members of the Latino Club.
Del-Valle shared the power of self-expression and the importance of telling their stories. She says that if we don?t tell our own story, then someone else will tell it for us.
?We all deserve to express ourself, to tell our story and to tap into the gifts and talents that are unique to us,? said Del-Valle.
Her story
Del-Valle is a Puerto Rican from the south side of Chicago and the daughter of immigrants. Now, she travels around the country telling stories her life. She considers herself a girl who likes to write and perform poems, and she feels lucky get to travel doing what she loves.
Del-Valle is on Oprah?s O Magazine ?O Power List,? and was chosen as one of ?America?s Young Innovators in the arts and sciences? by Smithsonian Magazine.
One of the things she does when traveling is talk to student about the power of self-expression and telling their story and the power of pursuing what you love to do.
?We are often times discouraged from pursuing things that we love to do or that we are passionate about because it is not practical,? said Del-Valle. ?Just let that go.?
Del-Valle began writing at the age of 14 as a part of a journal assignment in school. She found that she loved to write and it was a good way to express her feelings.
Some of the stories and poems are about her relationship with her mother, and are very personal.? Her goal in sharing them is to give voice to others who may have had similar experiences and are unable to voice them.
?Tongue Tactics?
Del-Valle won the individual championship of the National Poetry Slam with her poem ?Tongue Tactics? about how people talk. Del-Valle wrote the poem after getting mad at a friend who said some accents make people sound uneducated.
She encourages students of all backgrounds to aspire to something more than they are told they can achieve.? Del-Valle says that people should strive for more than mediocrity and the status-quo.
?I really believe that we have been put here to do something unique and special that only we can do and nobody else can do it the way we can,? said Del-Valle. ?So it is up to us to release those gifts and those talents because we live in a world that needs it right now.?

Foxconn closes China factory after brawl - Business Insider
A brawl involving as many as 2,000 workers forced Foxconn to close its Taiyuan plant in northern China late on Sunday, and left a number of people needing hospital treatment.
"The fight is over now ? we're still investigating the cause of the fight and the number of workers involved," said Foxconn spokesman Louis Woo, adding it was possible it involved "a couple of thousand workers."
A police statement reported by the official Xinhua news agency said 5,000 officers were dispatched to the scene.
The violence was brought under control after about four hours and 40 people were taken to hospitals for treatment, the Taiwanese-owned company said. It said several people were detained by police.
The violence did not appear to be work-related, the company and police said.
Comments posted on Chinese internet bulletin boards said it might have erupted after a security guard hit an employee.
The Taiyuan plant, which employs about 79,000 workers, makes parts for automotive electronics and assembles various electronic devices, according to Woo. Other staff sources said it makes parts for and assembles Apple's new iPhone 5, released last week.
Woo said the fight happened in the workers' dormitory facilities. Photographs of the incident that were posted to social networks but later deleted showed smashed windows and riot police, and crowds of workers.
Geoffrey Crothall, spokesman for the pressure group China Labor Bulletin, told The New York Times workers at the plants had become increasingly emboldened.
"They're more willing to stand up for their rights, to stand up to injustice," he said. The same plant was the subject of a brief strike over pay in March.
Foxconn, the trading name of Taiwan's Hon Hai Precision Industry Company, is the world's largest contract maker of electronic goods. It has seen a few violent disputes at its sprawling plants in China, where it employs a total of about 1 million workers. It is an important supplier for companies including Apple, Hewlett-Packard and Microsoft.
Hon Hai shares were down 1.14 percent by late on Monday morning, lagging behind the broader market's decline of 0.28 percent.
In June, about 100 workers went on a rampage at a Chengdu plant in south-west China. The company has faced allegations of poor conditions and mistreatment of workers at its Chinese operations, and has been spending heavily in recent months to raise wages and improve working conditions.
A staff member at the Taiyuan plant said he was told the plant could be closed up to two to three days while police investigate.
"There are a lot of police at the site now," the staff member, who asked not to be named, told Reuters by telephone.

Boardgames & Baking: A new game: Village
Last week I decided to act on an impulse and buy a new boardgame. I checked a list of nicely rated new-ish games and compared it to the offers of several e-shops that have their stone branches here in Prague.
Village or Kronika Panstv? (The Chronicle of a Domain as it could be translated) is German this year's Game of the Year. It looks like a standard ?worker placement game but in fact it is not.
Each player has a family and each round chooses what actions to take from a selection of places around the eponymous village. Some actions need a member put on them, some don't. Players collect little cubes standing for different kinds of influence that need to be spent for performing certain actions. Most of the actions need also "time" spent on them which eventually makes one of the family members die of old age.
Ultimately, each player strives to make their family be remembered the most - place their deceased members in the village's chronicle and the younger ones to attain importance for the village in a church (as monks) or a town hall (as local politicians or something).
I've played it once so far. I will write a proper post once I get to enjoy it more.

Mali Islamists becoming more repressive, report
BAMAKO, Mali (AP) ? Radical Islamists in control of northern Mali are becoming "increasingly repressive," amputating limbs, whipping people in the streets and stoning to death a couple accused of adultery, a human rights group said Tuesday.
The Islamists' efforts to impose their strict form of Islamic law known as Shariah has also extended to banning ring tones on mobile phones that are not Quranic verse readings, as well as prohibiting cigarettes and alcohol.
Women who wear jewelry or perfume, or fail to cover their heads can also face punishment, Human Rights Watch said in its report Tuesday.
"The Islamist armed groups have become increasingly repressive as they have tightened their grip over northern Mali," said Corinne Dufka, senior Africa researcher at Human Rights Watch. "Stonings, amputations and floggings have become the order of the day in an apparent attempt to force the local population to accept their world view."
Human Rights Watch said it had documented at least eight amputations since the radical Islamists seized power earlier this year in the north of Mali, a predominantly moderate Muslim country in western Africa. Other elderly residents collapsed after being flogged as punishment, the group said.
The Islamists were able to solidify their hold across the region after a military coup in the distant capital of Bamako last March. The country's vast north ? an area the size of France ? has fallen out of government control and the West African regional bloc has proposed a military intervention to help take back the area.
However, several Islamist groups including Ansar Dine and al-Qaida's North Africa branch have been strengthening their presence there in recent months amid the power vacuum. Witnesses have reported that most of the leadership has come from other countries, including Mauritania, Algeria, Senegal, Tunisia and Chad, Human Rights Watch said.
The Islamists have also recruited hundreds of children as young as 12 in an effort to boost their ranks after fighting in northern Mali forced nearly half a million people to flee earlier this year.
Northern Mali still remains too dangerous for most aid groups and activists to visit. Human Rights Watch said it had gathered information about the human rights abuses through interviews with nearly 100 people including victims, witnesses, religious leaders and others.
