Florida Writer Tim Dorsey Speaks at Library

Author Tim Dorsey will speak and sign books today at the Lakeland Public Library, 100 Lake Morton Drive. The Tampa author will read selections from his latest book, "Pineapple Grenade." He will also talk about writing, his career, and the role of Florida's history, nature and geography in his work. The event begins at 1 p.m., and is free.

"BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD"

screens at the Polk Theatre, 121 S. Florida Ave., Lakeland, at 7:30 p.m. today and 2 p.m. Sunday. For once, believe the hype. Since taking Sundance and Cannes by storm, "Beasts of the Southern Wild" had been a cause c?l?bre in film circles, one of those films lionized by filmmakers and critics but next to no one has actually seen. The film sprang out of nowhere, with a 6-year-old lead actress and a novice leading man who was hired from behind the counter of a New Orleans bakery. Rated PG-13; for thematic material including child imperilment, some disturbing images, language and brief sensuality. Reviewed by Colin Covert of The Star Tribune (Minneapolis). Admission is $7 adults, $5 students/seniors.

A SPORTSCARD SHOW

presented by Wally's World of Sportscards and Memorabilia will take place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Quality Inn, 4645 N. Socrum Loop Road, Lakeland. Free admission.

DISNEY ON ICE "ROCKIN' EVER AFTER"

is performed at the Arena, The Lakeland Center, 701 W. Lime St. Show times are 3:30, 7:30 p.m., with admission $15 to $38; at the box office.
