George Graham, of Gala, and Ian Rankin, of Dundee High, voiced their concerns after their sides had met in an RBS Premiership match at Netherdale on Saturday, which Gala won 17-16.
It was confirmed last week Michael Bradley, the Edinburgh coach, will not have his contract renewed at the end of this season. Graham had been touted as a potential successor, but the former Scotland prop hinted that he may not even bother to apply.
However, Graham suggested that a bolder approach would be rewarded. ?They took a huge punt on [Glasgow coach] Gregor Townsend, who had never coached a club at professional level, and he?s doing a great job,? he said. ?So why can?t Ally Donaldson or Kenny Murray do the same??
Rankin went further, suggesting that leading club coaches might drift away from the game if they continue to be overlooked for promotion. ?There are quite a few coaches in the Premiership who are seriously asking if they should continue,? he said ?That?s a real shame.?
Rankin pointed out that Edinburgh fielded a side recently in which only one of the eight starting forwards was Scottish qualified. ?You could take a handful of players from both sides here and they would be a better bet than some of the guys who are there at the moment,? he complained. ?To have just one Scottish forward starting for Edinburgh last week is a slap in the face for some of them.?
DTH Van der Merwe, one of the more successful imports in Scottish rugby, has signed a new deal with Glasgow that will keep him at the club until May 2015. The Canadian winger has scored eight RaboDirect PRO12 tries this season, second only to Edinburgh?s Tim Visser in the competition.
