They have avatars however they can make avatar look exactly like her/himself. As you see Refa has both game appearance and real life appearance.

Also, what is the technology level of this roleplay? I don't expect hard science, but is there, for instance, magical technology, or guns, engines, or the like, and how advanced are they?

Technology isn't real main aspect of ACO. If ACO had technology then players could just use some machinery to get to other worlds. So there are no guns or any advanced engines or cars.
