MLK-Gause parade Monday

There will likely be about 100 floats going down Main Street toward the Carver Recreation Center Monday that will highlight a weekend of events marking Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and and Bartow?s first black mayor, George H. Gause.

The parade with the theme Celebrate Diversity 2013: Let Hope Inspire the Dream, starts at Floral Avenue and Main Street at 10 a.m. Monday and goes to the recreation center where there will be a celebration complete with bounce houses, vendors and more for everyone.

The weekend celebration, sponsored by the Bartow Deacons & Stewards Alliance, starts with a scramble golf tournament at the Bartow Golf Course at 8 a.m. Saturday where tickets cost $65 per person or $260 per four-man team. All the money raised from the tournament will fund scholarships, said Brother Carver Young.

?The scholarships generally go to children from one-parent homes and to those who may not have the chance to continue (their education),? Young said. The Alliance gets a list from the schools to determine who may win. He said the scholarships are usually in the $500 range per student.

?We?d like to give out as many as we could,? he said. ?Last year we gave out 10 and 14 the year before.?

On Sunday, Pastor Lanelle Pickett of the Good Hope Missionary Baptist Church from Gordonville will give a speech at 3 p.m. at the Burkett Primitive Baptist Church, 415 S 3rd Ave, Bartow.

While most people may know who Dr. King Jr. is and the fact that he was killed 45 years ago on April 4 at age 40, the events are also named for George H. Gause who served twice as Bartow?s mayor in the 1970s, served seven years on the Bartow City Commission, served on the Polk County School Board and was the owner of the Gause Funeral Home in Bartow. He died in 1986.

For information about entering the parade, which is free, or taking part in the golf event, or other information, contact Young at 863-533-1207.
