Forest Grove student asked to remove breast-cancer awareness T ...

FOREST GROVE, Ore. -- A Forest Grove student alleges that she was told to take off her Susan G. Komen Race For The Cure t-shirt because it broke the school?s dress code.
?????????
Seventh-grader Emily Jones claims her science teacher at Neil Armstrong Middle School sent her to the school office Thursday morning to have other staff members take a look at her shirt; a white Komen shirt with pink ribbons and sponsor names.
??????????
?I was really surprised,? Jones said. ?I was like, ?What? It?s not inappropriate? It?s just about cancer.??
??????????
Jones says staff in the school office told her the shirt had too many prints and was the wrong color.? She was told to take it off, and was given a different t-shirt to wear for the day. Jones says a staff member told her the shirt could be considered gang-related.

?I was a little scared because I thought I was going to get in trouble, and I?m the type of person who never gets in trouble and gets good grades,? Jones said.
??????????
The school has a strict dress code.? Among the rules listed on its website is that girls cannot wear clothing that has pictures, words or logos.
??????????
Forest Grove School District spokesperson Connie Potter says parents recently asked for a stricter dress code, and since it has been in place this year, they have seen a decrease in discipline issues.
?????????
In an email to KOIN, Principal Brandon Hundley said he finds it doubtful his staff would suggest the shirt is gang related.? He said he was not at school during the incident Thursday, but wrote, ?The message of a breast cancer awareness shirt is definitely not offensive or problematic in any way other than the consistency of expectations.?
??????????
He continued: ?The message of the shirt may not have any negative impact of message and yet it still falls outside the bounds of our dress and appearance standards.?
?????????
Ironically, Jones says she initially purchased the shirt for a cancer awareness school spirit day.
