Railway Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal says India is a mobocracy, feels netas don't need to speak to protesters

Union Railway Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal has termed the groups of people protesting for justice for the Delhi gangrape victim as 'Mobocracy'. Bansal said that thousands who gathered at India Gate or at Jantar Mantar and even at different parts of the country, were driven by a mob mentality.

The Railway Minister made this observation in an exclusive interview to Headlines Today's Managing Editor Rahul Kanwal.

He also said that unlike USA where President Obama, who personally met victims of shooting at a school in Connecticut, the Indian politicians are not bound to come forward every time and speak to the protestors.

The shocking statement of Bansal that "India is a mobocracy" has shocked the entire country and is likely to raise hackles.

The 23-year-old woman, who was raped and brutally assaulted on Dec 16, 2012, was given several pseudonyms by media and protestors including 'Damini', 'Nirbhaya' and 'Amanat'.

Activists and politicians have demanded amendments to anti-rape law to ensure speedy justice and tougher punishment for criminals.

On women's security, even the Supreme Court on Friday held that there was no safety for women on Delhi's roads. The apex court said said: "We are failing to treat women with dignity, equality and respect."

Pawan Kumar Bansal, who is already facing opposition criticism for rising rail fare, had announced that the hikes will be effective form Jan 21 midnight onwards.

Earlier, he said that the hike was "imperative" to maintain and improve the safety measures and cleanliness of the trains, as well as upgrade railway stations. He, however, said there would be no increase when the annual rail budget is presented in February.
